What this converter does

This turns a number of years into months. Since a year is exactly 12 months, the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the years and the months come straight back, with decimals for any part-year.

How to use it

  1. Enter Years. Type the number of years.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in months appears.

How the conversion works

There are 12 months in a year, so to convert years to months you multiply by 12. So 1 year is 12 months, 2 years is 24, and half a year is 6. The number grows because a month is the smaller unit, and the relationship is fixed: a year is always 12 months.

Why this is exact

Turning years into days or seconds has to use an average year of 365.25 days, because a year is not a whole number of days. This conversion avoids all of that by staying in whole calendar units. A year is defined as exactly 12 months, no matter how many days those months hold, so there is no average and no estimate here. So 1.5 years is exactly 18 months, every time. It is one of the clean conversions, the mirror of turning months back into years.

An example

Take 2 years. Multiply by 12 and you get exactly 24 months. A year and a half is 18 months, 3 years is 36, and a quarter of a year is 3 months. The leftover part of a year shows as the decimal, so 2.25 years is 27 months.

Questions people ask
