What this converter does

This turns a number of hours into months, for when an hour total has grown big enough that a larger unit makes more sense. Because months are not all the same length, this works on an average month rather than an exact one, so the result is a rough figure meant for planning rather than a precise count. Enter the hours and the months come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Hours. Type the number of hours.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in months appears.

The average month it uses

The conversion divides by about 730, which is the number of hours in an average month. You can see where it comes from: a year of 365 days split into 12 months gives a month of roughly 30.4 days, and 30.4 days times 24 hours is close to 730 hours. So one average month is treated as 730 hours here. That is a sensible middle figure, sitting between a short February and a long 31-day month.

Why this is rough, not exact

Real months range from 28 days to 31, so no actual month is exactly 730 hours, and a span that falls across particular months could differ from this by a fair bit. That is fine for what this is for, getting a sense of how many months a large hour total represents, but it is not the tool for an exact answer. If you need the precise number of months between two real dates, a date-to-date tool that counts the actual calendar is the right choice, since it knows how long each month truly was.

An example

Take 730 hours. Divide by 730 and you get about 1 month. A total of 1,460 hours is roughly 2 months, and 365 hours is about half a month. The numbers are approximate by design, giving you the scale in months rather than an exact count.

Questions people ask

How many hours are in a month?

About 730 on average, since an average month is roughly 30.4 days and each day is 24 hours. Real months vary from about 672 hours in February to 744 in a 31-day month.

Is the result exact?

No, it is a rough estimate based on an average month. Months are 28 to 31 days long, so for an exact figure use a date-to-date tool that counts the real calendar.

Why use an average month?

Because months differ in length, a single conversion factor has to use a typical value. The roughly 730-hour average lets the tool give a quick, sensible figure for planning.

How do I go from months back to hours?

Multiply the months by about 730, or use a months-to-hours converter, which uses the same average.
