What this converter does

This turns a number of years into centuries. A century is 100 years, so the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the years and the centuries come straight back, with decimals for anything short of a whole century.

How to use it

  1. Enter Years. Type the number of years.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in centuries appears.

How the conversion works

There are 100 years in a century, so to convert years to centuries you divide by 100. So 100 years is 1 century, 200 years is 2, and 50 years is half a century. Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places, which makes it an easy one to do at a glance. And since a century is exactly 100 years, it is exact, with nothing to average.

A span of years, not a named century

It is worth drawing one distinction. This tool measures a length of time: 100 years is one century of duration, plain and simple. That is a separate question from which years a named century covers, like the 21st century, which is the kind of thing people sometimes argue about. Because the calendar started at year 1, not year 0, the 1st century ran from year 1 to year 100, which puts the 21st century at 2001 to 2100 rather than 2000 to 2099. That numbering debate is about labelling periods on the calendar. Here you are just counting how many hundred-year spans a number of years adds up to, which has no such ambiguity.

An example

Take 200 years. Divide by 100 and you get exactly 2 centuries. A span of 250 years is 2.5 centuries, 50 years is half a century, and 1,000 years is 10 centuries, a millennium. The decimal carries the leftover years, so 150 years is 1.5 centuries.

Questions people ask

How many years are in a century?

100. So to convert years to centuries you divide by 100. Two hundred years is 2 centuries.

How many centuries is 250 years?

2.5 centuries, since 250 divided by 100 is two and a half.

Is this exact?

Yes. A century is exactly 100 years by definition, so there is no average or approximation.

How do I go from centuries back to years?

Multiply the centuries by 100, or use a centuries-to-years converter.
