What this converter does

This turns a number of centuries into years. A century is 100 years, so the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the centuries and the years come straight back, with decimals for any part-century.

How to use it

  1. Enter Centuries. Type the number of centuries.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in years appears.

How the conversion works

There are 100 years in a century, so to convert centuries to years you multiply by 100. So 1 century is 100 years, 2 centuries is 200, and half a century is 50. Multiplying by 100 shifts the decimal two places, and since a century is exactly 100 years, the result is exact, with nothing to average.

A length of time, plainly counted

This conversion measures a span: a century is 100 years of duration, full stop. That is worth separating from the question of which calendar years a named century covers, which can be confusing. Because the calendar began at year 1 rather than year 0, the first century ran from year 1 to year 100, which is why the 21st century is counted as 2001 to 2100. That is a matter of labelling periods on the calendar, though. Here you are simply turning a number of hundred-year spans into the years they contain, where two and a half centuries is plainly 250 years.

An example

Take 2 centuries. Multiply by 100 and you get exactly 200 years. Half a century is 50 years, 2.5 centuries is 250, and 10 centuries is 1,000 years, a millennium. The decimal carries any part, so 1.5 centuries is 150 years.

Questions people ask

How many years are in a century?

100. So to convert centuries to years you multiply by 100. Two centuries is 200 years.

How many years is 2.5 centuries?

250 years, since two and a half times 100 is 250.

Is this exact?

Yes. A century is exactly 100 years by definition, so there is no average or approximation.

How do I go from years back to centuries?

Divide the years by 100, or use a years-to-centuries converter.
