What this converter does

This turns a number of hours into weeks. When you are looking at a workload, a study plan, or a project on a weekly scale, expressing the hours as weeks can make the size of it clearer. Enter the hours and the weeks come straight back, with decimals for any part-week.

How to use it

  1. Enter Hours. Type the number of hours.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in weeks appears.

Where the 168 comes from

A week is 7 days, and each day is 24 hours, so a week holds 7 times 24, which is 168 hours. To convert hours to weeks, then, you divide by 168. That makes 168 hours exactly 1 week, 84 hours half a week, and 336 hours 2 weeks. The 168 is just 7 and 24 multiplied together, and the result is exact.

A full week, not a work week

This is worth being clear about, because it changes the answer. The week here is the full calendar week of 168 hours, every one of the seven days around the clock. It is not the 40-hour working week. So if you are thinking about working hours, the number from this tool will look small: 40 hours of work is only about 0.24 of a full 168-hour week, not a whole week, because it counts only the working part of those days. For a span of real elapsed time, the 168-hour week is the right measure. For a workload measured in working weeks, you would divide by your own working-week length, such as 40, instead.

An example

Take 168 hours. Divide by 168 and you get exactly 1 week. A span of 336 hours is 2 weeks, and 84 hours is half a week. By contrast, a 40-hour working week comes out as about 0.24 of a calendar week here, a reminder that the two kinds of week are very different sizes.

Questions people ask

How many hours are in a week?

168, which is 7 days times 24 hours. So to convert hours to weeks you divide by 168.

Does this use a 40-hour work week?

No. It uses the full 168-hour calendar week, all seven days around the clock. For working weeks, divide by your own working-week length instead.

What is 40 hours in weeks?

About 0.24 of a week, since 40 divided by 168 is roughly a quarter. A 40-hour work week is only part of a full 168-hour week.

How do I go from weeks back to hours?

Multiply the weeks by 168, or use a weeks-to-hours converter.
