How the conversion works

There are 24 hours in a day, so to go from hours up to days you divide by 24. So 24 hours is 1 day, 48 hours is 2 days, and 12 hours is half a day. The number shrinks because a day is the larger unit, and the relationship is exact. It is the reverse of turning days into hours, where you would multiply by 24.

Why days make estimates clearer

Hours work well for short stretches, but for anything spanning more than a day they start to lose their grip.
