What this converter does

This turns a number of years into decades. A decade is simply 10 years, so the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the years and the decades come straight back, with decimals for anything that does not land on a whole decade.

How to use it

  1. Enter Years. Type the number of years.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in decades appears.

How the conversion works

There are 10 years in a decade, so to convert years to decades you divide by 10. So 10 years is 1 decade, 20 years is 2, and 5 years is half a decade. Dividing by 10 just moves the decimal point one place, which makes this one of the easiest conversions to do in your head. And because a decade is exactly 10 years, it is exact, with no averaging.

Why we think in decades

Decades are how we tend to group longer stretches of time, especially in history and culture. We talk about the 1960s or the 1990s as units with their own character, and we measure progress, careers, and eras in tens of years. So once a span of years gets long, decades give it a shape that is easier to hold than a bare count of years. Forty years of something reads naturally as four decades, a span of real length.

An example

Take 20 years. Divide by 10 and you get exactly 2 decades. A span of 25 years is 2.5 decades, 5 years is half a decade, and a century, 100 years, is 10 decades. The decimal carries the leftover years, so 35 years is 3.5 decades.

Questions people ask

How many years are in a decade?

10. So to convert years to decades you divide by 10. Twenty years is 2 decades.

How many decades is 25 years?

2.5 decades, since 25 divided by 10 is two and a half.

Is this exact?

Yes. A decade is exactly 10 years by definition, so there is no average or approximation.

How do I go from decades back to years?

Multiply the decades by 10, or use a decades-to-years converter.
