What this converter does

This turns a number of weeks into months. Because months vary in length, it uses an average month, so the answer is a practical estimate rather than an exact calendar figure. It is a common conversion when something is counted in weeks but usually talked about in months. Enter the weeks and the months come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Weeks. Type the number of weeks.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in months appears.

Roughly four and a third weeks a month

People often round a month to 4 weeks, but that is a little short. Four weeks is only 28 days, while an average month is a touch over 30, so a month is really about 4.35 weeks. That is the figure this tool divides by. The gap matters once you add several months up: twelve months of 4 weeks would be only 48 weeks, but a year is closer to 52, and the extra comes from that fraction of a week each month carries.

A common reason: weeks of pregnancy

One of the most frequent reasons people convert weeks to months is pregnancy, which is tracked week by week but often described in months. This is exactly where the 4-weeks-a-month shortcut trips people up. A full term of 40 weeks is not 10 months, as four weeks each would suggest, but about 9 months, because each month is really around 4.35 weeks. So 40 weeks divided by 4.35 comes to roughly 9.2, which is why pregnancy is talked about as nine months rather than ten.

Why it is an estimate

Real months run from 28 days to 31, so the average is a stand-in rather than an exact length, and a span across particular months can differ from the figure here. For a sense of how many months a number of weeks comes to, it is perfectly good. For an exact count between two real dates, a date-to-date tool that follows the actual calendar is the better choice.

An example

Take 4.35 weeks. Divide by 4.35 and you get about 1 month. A span of 13 weeks is roughly 3 months, and 26 weeks is about 6 months, half a year. The classic case, 40 weeks, comes out as about 9.2 months.

Questions people ask

How many weeks are in a month?

About 4.35 on average, not a flat 4, since an average month is a little over 30 days rather than 28. So to convert weeks to months you divide by about 4.35.

How many months is 40 weeks?

About 9.2 months, which is why a 40-week pregnancy is described as roughly nine months rather than ten.

Is the result exact?

No, it is an estimate based on an average month. For an exact figure, use a date-to-date tool that counts the real calendar.

How do I go from months back to weeks?

Multiply the months by about 4.35, or use a months-to-weeks converter.
