What this converter does

This turns a number of hours into minutes. When you are dividing time up, a span in minutes is often easier to work with than the same span in hours, especially when it does not land on a whole hour. Enter the hours and the minutes come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Hours. Type the number of hours.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in minutes appears.

How the conversion works

There are 60 minutes in an hour, so to convert hours to minutes you multiply by 60. So 2 hours is 120 minutes, 1.5 hours is 90 minutes, and 8 hours is 480. The number grows because a minute is the smaller unit, and the relationship is exact, sitting on the clock's base of 60.

Why minutes help with planning

Minutes are a handy unit for splitting up and budgeting time. If you are carving a few hours into slots, working out billable time, or planning a schedule, minutes give you the fine control that whole hours do not. It is easier to divide 480 minutes into tasks than to keep juggling eighths of an hour, and a span like two and a half hours reads cleanly as 150 minutes.

An example

Take 8 hours. Multiply by 60 and you have 480 minutes, a full working day to divide up. A 1.5 hour meeting is 90 minutes, and 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. The conversion turns hours into the minute figures that scheduling and billing usually run on.
