What this converter does

This turns a number of centuries into decades. Since a century is 10 decades, the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the centuries and the decades come straight back, with decimals for any part-century.

How to use it

  1. Enter Centuries. Type the number of centuries.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in decades appears.

How the conversion works

There are 10 decades in a century, so to convert centuries to decades you multiply by 10. So 1 century is 10 decades, 2 centuries is 20, and half a century is 5 decades. Multiplying by 10 shifts the decimal one place, and since a century is exactly 10 decades, the result is exact.

Why break a century into decades

A century is a big span to picture all at once, and decades break it into pieces that are easier to think about, the way we naturally talk about history in the twenties, the fifties, the eighties. Splitting a century, or a few centuries, into decades gives you a count of those more graspable chunks. Three centuries, for instance, is 30 decades, thirty of those ten-year stretches each with its own character.

An example

Take 2 centuries. Multiply by 10 and you get exactly 20 decades. Half a century is 5 decades, 3 centuries is 30, and 10 centuries, a millennium, is 100 decades. The decimal carries any part, so 1.5 centuries is 15 decades.

Questions people ask

How many decades are in a century?

10. So to convert centuries to decades you multiply by 10. Two centuries is 20 decades.

How many decades is 3 centuries?

30 decades, since three times 10 is 30.

Is this exact?

Yes. A century is exactly 10 decades by definition, so there is no average or approximation.

How do I go from decades back to centuries?

Divide the decades by 10, or use a decades-to-centuries converter.
