What this converter does

This turns a number of seconds into hours. When a second count gets large enough that even minutes feel unwieldy, hours bring it down to a size you can take in. Enter the seconds and the hours come straight back, with decimals for any part-hour.

How to use it

  1. Enter Seconds. Type the number of seconds.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in hours appears.

Where the 3,600 comes from

An hour is 60 minutes, and each minute is 60 seconds, so an hour holds 60 times 60, which is 3,600 seconds. To convert seconds to hours, then, you divide by 3,600. So 3,600 seconds is 1 hour, 1,800 seconds is half an hour, and 7,200 seconds is 2 hours. It is two steps of 60 rolled into one divide, and the result is exact.

Why convert to hours

Hours are the natural unit for spans that run from part of an hour up to most of a day. A duration stored or measured in seconds, the length of a video or audio file, a stretch of recorded activity, a timing figure you want to compare against others, all become much easier to grasp in hours once the second count is in the thousands or tens of thousands. It is the step that turns a long number into something you can reason about at a glance.

An example

Take 5,400 seconds. Divide by 3,600 and you have 1.5 hours. A file that runs 7,200 seconds is 2 hours, and 900 seconds is 0.25 of an hour, which is a quarter of an hour or 15 minutes.

Questions people ask

How many seconds are in an hour?

3,600, which is 60 minutes times 60 seconds. So to convert seconds to hours you divide by 3,600.

What is 5,400 seconds in hours?

1.5 hours, since 5,400 divided by 3,600 is one and a half. That is an hour and a half.

What is 0.25 of an hour?

15 minutes, a quarter of an hour. So 900 seconds, which is 0.25 hours, is the same as 15 minutes.

How do I go from hours back to seconds?

Multiply the hours by 3,600, or use an hours-to-seconds converter.
