What this converter does

This turns a number of weeks into years. It uses an average year, since a year is not a whole number of weeks any more than it is a whole number of days, so the result is a close estimate. Enter the weeks and the years come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Weeks. Type the number of weeks.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in years appears.

Why a year is not exactly 52 weeks

Almost everyone rounds a year to 52 weeks, and it is very nearly right, but not quite. Fifty-two weeks is 52 times 7, which is 364 days, one day short of a normal 365-day year. So a year is really about 52.18 weeks, the 52 plus that extra day or two each year, and once leap years are averaged in the figure settles at roughly 52.18. That is the number this tool divides by. It is why a calendar date falls on a slightly later weekday each year, that leftover day past the 52 full weeks.

Why it is an estimate

Because it works on an average year of about 52.18 weeks, the answer is close rather than exact for a particular span, and a stretch with more or fewer leap years than average will come out a little different. For getting a sense of how many years a number of weeks adds up to, that is fine. For the exact gap between two real dates, a date-to-date tool that counts the actual calendar is the better choice.

An example

Take 52.18 weeks. Divide by 52.18 and you get about 1 year. A span of 104 weeks is close to 2 years, and 26 weeks is about half a year. A flat 52 weeks comes out as roughly 0.997 of a year, just under one, because it is a day short of a full year.

Questions people ask

How many weeks are in a year?

About 52.18, not exactly 52. Fifty-two weeks is only 364 days, so a year is a little more, and the leap-year average brings it to roughly 52.18.

Isn't a year just 52 weeks?

Almost, but 52 weeks is 364 days, one short of 365. So a year is about 52.18 weeks, which is why a date shifts to a later weekday each year.

Is the result exact?

No, it is an estimate based on an average year. For an exact figure, use a date-to-date tool that counts actual days.

How do I go from years back to weeks?

Multiply the years by about 52.18, or use a years-to-weeks converter.
