What this converter does

This turns a number of decades into centuries. Since a century is 10 decades, the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the decades and the centuries come straight back, with decimals for anything short of a whole century.

How to use it

  1. Enter Decades. Type the number of decades.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in centuries appears.

How the conversion works

There are 10 decades in a century, so to convert decades to centuries you divide by 10. So 10 decades is 1 century, 20 decades is 2, and 5 decades is half a century. Dividing by 10 moves the decimal one place, and since a century is exactly 10 decades, the result is exact.

A tidy ladder of tens

The largest time units make a pleasingly simple ladder, each step a factor of ten. A decade is 10 years, a century is 10 decades, and a millennium is 10 centuries. So once you are up at this scale, conversions are just shifts of the decimal point, with none of the awkward factors that days, weeks, and months bring lower down. Decades to centuries is one rung of that ladder, which is why it is so clean: 30 decades is simply 3 centuries.

An example

Take 20 decades. Divide by 10 and you get exactly 2 centuries. Half a century is 5 decades, 25 decades is 2.5 centuries, and 100 decades is 10 centuries, a thousand years. The decimal carries the leftover, so 35 decades is 3.5 centuries.

Questions people ask

How many decades are in a century?

10. So to convert decades to centuries you divide by 10. Twenty decades is 2 centuries.

How many centuries is 25 decades?

2.5 centuries, since 25 divided by 10 is two and a half.

Is this exact?

Yes. A century is exactly 10 decades by definition, so there is no average or approximation.

How do I go from centuries back to decades?

Multiply the centuries by 10, or use a centuries-to-decades converter.
