What this converter does

This turns a number of quarters into months. Since a quarter is a block of three months, the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the quarters and the months come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Quarters. Type the number of quarters.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in months appears.

How the conversion works

A quarter is defined as three months, so to convert quarters to months you multiply by 3. So 1 quarter is 3 months, 2 quarters is 6, and 4 quarters is 12, a full year. There is no averaging or approximation here, because you are staying in whole calendar units where the relationship is fixed: a quarter is always exactly three months.

Which months each quarter covers

In a standard business year, the four quarters split the months evenly. The first quarter, Q1, covers January, February, and March. The second, Q2, runs April through June. The third, Q3, is July to September, and the fourth, Q4, is October to December. Some organisations begin their financial year in a different month, which shifts the labels, but each quarter is still three consecutive months. So converting quarters to months is really just counting those blocks of three.

An example

Take 2 quarters. Multiply by 3 and you get exactly 6 months, half a business year. A single quarter is 3 months, 3 quarters is 9 months, and 4 quarters is 12 months. A part-quarter scales the same way, so half a quarter is 1.5 months.
