What this converter does

This turns a number of hours into years, for summarising a really large hour total in a familiar unit. Like the other conversions that reach up to years, it works on an average year rather than an exact one, since a year is not a whole number of days, so the result is a practical estimate. Enter the hours and the years come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Hours. Type the number of hours.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in years appears.

Where the 8,766 comes from

The conversion divides by 8,766, and it is worth seeing why. This tool treats a year as 365.25 days, the average length once leap years are counted in, since adding a leap day every four years works out to an extra quarter day per year. A day is 24 hours, so 365.25 times 24 is 8,766 hours in an average year. That is why one year here is 8,766 hours, a little more than the 8,760 you would get from a flat 365 days, the difference being the leap-year quarter day carried through.

Why it is an estimate

Using an average means the answer is close rather than exact for any particular span. No single year is 365.25 days; real years are 365 or 366. So a stretch of time with more or fewer leap years than the average will come out slightly different. For everyday summarising of a big hour total, that is perfectly fine, but if you need the exact number of years between two real dates, a date-to-date duration tool that counts the actual calendar is the better choice.

An example

Take 8,766 hours. Divide by that and you get exactly 1 year. A total of 17,532 hours is 2 years, and 4,383 hours is about half a year. The point is the scale, roughly how many years a large hour figure adds up to, rather than a count precise to the hour.

Questions people ask

How many hours are in a year?

About 8,766, using an average year of 365.25 days times 24 hours. A flat 365-day year is 8,760 hours, and a leap year is 8,784.

Why 8,766 and not 8,760?

Because of leap years. The average year is 365.25 days rather than 365, and that extra quarter day, times 24 hours, adds 6 hours, taking 8,760 up to 8,766.

Is the result exact?

No, it is an estimate based on an average year. For an exact figure between two real dates, use a date-to-date tool that counts actual days.

How do I go from years back to hours?

Multiply the years by 8,766, or use a years-to-hours converter, which uses the same average year.
