What this converter does

This turns a number of quarters into years. Since a year is made of four quarters, the conversion is clean and exact. Enter the quarters and the years come straight back, with decimals for any leftover quarters.

How to use it

  1. Enter Quarters. Type the number of quarters.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in years appears.

How the conversion works

There are 4 quarters in a year, one for each three-month block, so to convert quarters to years you divide by 4. So 4 quarters is 1 year, 2 quarters is half a year, and 8 quarters is 2 years. The number shrinks because a year is the larger unit, and the relationship is fixed at four quarters to the year.

Why this is exact

This is one of the clean ones. Turning days or seconds into years needs an average year of 365.25 days, because a year is not a whole number of days. But quarters and years are both whole calendar units, and a year is defined as exactly four quarters regardless of how many days those quarters contain. So there is no average and no estimate: 6 quarters is exactly 1.5 years, every time. Counting the business year in quarters lines up perfectly with counting it in years.

An example

Take 6 quarters. Divide by 4 and you get exactly 1.5 years. A single quarter is a quarter of a year, 0.25, two quarters is half a year, and 8 quarters is 2 years. So a company reporting its eighth straight quarter is marking two full years.

Questions people ask

How many quarters are in a year?

4, one for each three-month block. So to convert quarters to years you divide by 4.

What is 1 quarter in years?

0.25 of a year, a quarter, which is where the name comes from.

Is this exact?

Yes. A year is exactly four quarters by definition, so unlike turning days or seconds into years, there is no average or approximation involved.

How do I go from years back to quarters?

Multiply the years by 4, or use a years-to-quarters converter.
