What this converter does

This turns a number of minutes into hours. Once a minute count climbs past 60 or so, hours give a clearer sense of how long a span really is. Enter the minutes and the hours come straight back, with decimals for any leftover minutes.

How to use it

  1. Enter Minutes. Type the number of minutes.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in hours appears.

How the conversion works

There are 60 minutes in an hour, so to go from minutes up to hours you divide by 60. So 60 minutes is 1 hour, 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, and 30 minutes is half an hour. The number shrinks because an hour is the larger unit, and the relationship is exact. It is the reverse of turning hours into minutes, where you would multiply by 60 instead.

Why hours read more easily

Minutes are fine for shorter spans, but a large minute count hides its real size. Told that something ran 195 minutes, most people have to work out that it is a little over three hours, while the figure 3.25 hours says it straight away. Durations that come out of a timer, a schedule, or a log in minutes are often easier to grasp, and easier to compare, once they are expressed in hours.

An example

Take 90 minutes. Divide by 60 and you have 1.5 hours, an hour and a half. A span of 120 minutes is 2 hours, and 195 minutes is 3.25 hours. The leftover minutes show up as the decimal, so 75 minutes is 1.25 hours.

Questions people ask

How many minutes are in an hour?

60. So to convert minutes to hours you divide by 60. Ninety minutes is 1.5 hours.

What is 90 minutes in hours?

1.5 hours, since 90 divided by 60 is one and a half. That is an hour and a half.

What do the leftover minutes become?

A fraction of an hour. Fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour, so 75 minutes is 1.25 hours.

How do I go from hours back to minutes?

Multiply the hours by 60, or use an hours-to-minutes converter.
