What this converter does

This turns a number of quarters into days. A quarter is a three-month block of the business year, and because those three months vary in length, the conversion uses an average quarter, so the result is a practical estimate. Enter the quarters and the days come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Quarters. Type the number of quarters.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in days appears.

The average quarter in days

The conversion multiplies by 91.25, the number of days in an average quarter. It comes straight from the year: a quarter is a quarter of a year, and a 365-day year divided by 4 is 91.25 days. So one quarter is treated as 91.25 days, and four quarters add back up to 365, a full year. This is why a business quarter is often rounded to 90 days in casual use, even though the average is a little over 91.

Why real quarters differ

The actual quarters are not all the same length, which is worth knowing. Counting calendar days, the first quarter from January to March is 90 days, or 91 in a leap year. The second, April to June, is 91 days. The third and fourth, covering July to December, are 92 days each. So real quarters run from 90 to 92 days, and the 91.25 average sits in the middle. For a sense of how many days a number of quarters covers, the average is fine, but for an exact figure across specific quarters, counting the real calendar dates is the way.

An example

Take 1 quarter. Multiply by 91.25 and you get about 91 days. Two quarters is 182.5 days, roughly half a year, and 4 quarters is 365 days, a full year. The figures use the standard average quarter rather than any specific three months.

Questions people ask

How many days are in a quarter?

About 91.25 on average, from a 365-day year divided by 4. Real quarters run from 90 to 92 days depending on which three months they cover.

Is a quarter 90 days?

It is often rounded to 90, but the average is a little over 91, and real quarters are 90 to 92 days. The 90-day figure is a convenient approximation.

Is the result exact?

No, it is an estimate based on an average quarter. For an exact figure across specific quarters, count the real calendar dates.

How do I go from days back to quarters?

Divide the days by 91.25, or use a days-to-quarters approach for a rough figure.
