What this converter does

This takes minutes and gives you microseconds, the longest reach down from a clock unit into the fine ones. A microsecond is a millionth of a second, so even a single minute becomes a huge microsecond figure. Enter the minutes and the microseconds come straight back.

How to use it

  1. Enter Minutes. Type the number of minutes.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in microseconds appears.

Sixty, then a million

Like the millisecond version, this crosses two number bases, just further. Minutes to seconds is a multiply by 60, the clock base. Then seconds to microseconds is a multiply by 1,000,000, since there are a million microseconds in a second. Together that is 60 times a million, which is 60,000,000. So to convert minutes to microseconds you multiply by 60,000,000, making one minute exactly 60 million microseconds. The relationship is exact, it is just a very large factor.

Why reach for microseconds

Microseconds are the unit of high-resolution timing, used where fast events need to be told apart at a level seconds and milliseconds cannot reach. It is not a unit you would normally express a span of minutes in for its own sake, but if you are lining a minute-scale value up against microsecond measurements, or feeding a system that timestamps at that resolution, this puts the two on the same fine footing. The very large result is simply what a minute looks like measured in millionths of a second.

An example

Take 1 minute. Multiply by 60,000,000 and you have 60,000,000 microseconds. Half a minute is 30,000,000, and 2 minutes is 120,000,000. The enormous figures reflect how many millionths of a second fit inside a single minute.

Questions people ask

How many microseconds are in a minute?

60,000,000. A minute is 60 seconds, and each second is a million microseconds, so 60 times a million is 60 million. To convert, multiply by 60,000,000.

Why is the number so large?

Because a microsecond is a millionth of a second, so it takes 60 million of them to make one minute.

What is half a minute in microseconds?

30,000,000 microseconds, half of 60 million.

How do I go back to minutes?

Divide the microseconds by 60,000,000.
