What this converter does

This turns a number of seconds into minutes. Seconds are the unit a lot of raw timing comes in, but once a count climbs past a minute or two it stops being easy to picture, and minutes give you a cleaner read. Enter the seconds and the minutes come straight back, decimals included for the leftover seconds.

How to use it

  1. Enter Seconds. Type the number of seconds.

Press Calculate and the equivalent in minutes appears.

How the conversion works

There are 60 seconds in a minute, so to go from seconds to minutes you divide by 60. So 120 seconds is 2 minutes, 90 seconds is 1.5 minutes, and 30 seconds is half a minute. This is the first place the small-unit conversions leave the tidy thousands behind, because minutes are built on 60 rather than on 10 or 1,000. The relationship is still exact, just on a base of 60.

Why minutes are easier to read

A seconds count is precise but quickly becomes a wall of digits. Told something took 270 seconds, most people have to stop and divide before it means anything, whereas 4.5 minutes lands at once. Timers, stopwatches, and readouts often produce a raw second total, and minutes are usually the first step up that makes that total readable without losing much detail.

An example

Take 120 seconds. Divide by 60 and you have 2 minutes. A timer reading 90 seconds is 1.5 minutes, and 3,600 seconds is 60 minutes, a full hour. The leftover seconds always show up as the decimal part, so 150 seconds is 2.5 minutes.

Questions people ask

How many seconds are in a minute?

60. So to convert seconds to minutes you divide by 60. One hundred and twenty seconds is 2 minutes.

What is 90 seconds in minutes?

1.5 minutes, since 90 divided by 60 is one and a half. The extra 30 seconds is the half.

What happens to leftover seconds?

They become a fraction of a minute. Thirty seconds is 0.5, so 150 seconds comes out as 2.5 minutes.

How do I go from minutes back to seconds?

Multiply the minutes by 60, or use a minutes-to-seconds converter.
