So you drew a Serie A club

You wanted an Italian top-flight club and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. That list runs wider than one season, taking in clubs from across Serie A's history, so a pull might be a modern giant or a proud old name now playing in a lower division. More on that below.

The tool is simple, so the words are better spent on the league, and Serie A is worth it, because for a long time this was the most tactically sophisticated football on earth.

The home of tactical football

If England gave football its passion and Spain its artistry, Italy gave it its brain. Serie A is the spiritual home of defensive organisation and tactical detail, the league that produced Catenaccio, the famously miserly defensive system whose name means "door-bolt", built to lock a game down and win it one-nil. Italian football has long prized the art of not conceding as highly as the art of scoring, and it has produced many of the greatest defenders and most cunning coaches the sport has seen.

That reputation is not just history. Serie A went through a lean patch in the 2000s and 2010s but has climbed back among Europe's very strongest leagues, and Italian clubs are once again a threat in European competition. So when the tool hands you a Serie A club, it hands you a piece of the league where football is treated most like a chess match.

The big three, and a scandal

Three clubs tower over Italian football. Juventus, from Turin, are the record champions with 36 league titles, and their nine in a row from 2012 to 2020 is the longest winning streak any of Europe's major leagues has ever seen. Inter Milan are next, on 21 after taking the 2026 title, and their city rivals AC Milan sit on 19. Between them, those three clubs have won the Italian league the large majority of times it has been contested.

But Italian football also carries a darker chapter, and it is worth knowing. In 2006 the Calciopoli scandal broke, an affair over the fixing of referee appointments that implicated several top clubs and, above all, Juventus. The punishment was severe: Juventus were stripped of a title, denied another, and relegated to the second division for the only time in their history. It is why any honest account of Serie A's record books comes with an asterisk or two. And it is not all Turin and Milan: Napoli, carried to glory by Diego Maradona in the 1980s and champions again in recent years, are the pride of the south and proof the giants can be beaten.

Where the pool comes from

Italy runs promotion and relegation like the rest of Europe, and its history is full of clubs that rose, fell, and rose again. Rather than pin this tool to one season's twenty clubs, which would date the moment someone went down, the list draws from the broader set of clubs that have played in Serie A over the years, the current sides and the historic ones. So a random pull is really a pull from the league's long story, from the modern powers to old names like Sampdoria and Parma who have had their own moments in the sun.

What a random Serie A club is good for

  • A save in Football Manager or EA FC. Take the club the draw gives you and build it. Restoring a fallen Italian giant, or dragging a mid-table side up to the big three, is a classic save.
  • Picking a club to follow. New to Italian football and drawn to the tactical side of the game? Let the draw choose your side and follow a season.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. Draw a club and build questions on it, its city, its colours, its place in the pecking order.
  • Settling a debate. Pull two clubs and argue the better side, past or present.
  • Fantasy and assignments. Handing clubs to a group, a draft, or a friendly pool.

Serie A questions

Which club has won the most Serie A titles?

Juventus, with a record 36. Inter Milan are next on 21, having won the 2026 title, and AC Milan sit on 19. Those three clubs have won the Italian league far more often than everyone else combined.

What was the Calciopoli scandal?

It was a 2006 match-fixing affair centred on the manipulation of referee appointments. It implicated several clubs, most notably Juventus, who were stripped of a title and relegated to the second division as punishment, the only time that has happened to them.

Why is Italian football known for defending?

Serie A built its identity on tactical organisation and defensive discipline, and it gave the sport Catenaccio, a famously tight defensive system. Italy has long produced many of the world's best defenders and most tactically shrewd coaches.

Can I pull several clubs, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
