You wanted an NBA club and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from the thirty teams currently in the league. The set is complete and current, so a random pull is a genuine draw from the whole competition.

The tool is the simple part. The NBA's structure, and particularly the mechanism by which it hands its best young players to its worst teams, is worth understanding, because it explains why this league behaves so differently from a European football division.

How the NBA is carved up

Thirty clubs, split into the Eastern and Western Conferences of fifteen apiece, and each conference into three divisions of five. The divisions barely matter now, surviving mostly as scheduling conveniences and a line on the standings.

Everybody plays eighty-two games. The top six in each conference go straight to the playoffs, and teams seventh through tenth enter a short play-in tournament for the last two places. The playoffs are four rounds of best-of-seven, entirely within each conference until the Finals, which means the champion is decided by a series between the best of the East and the best of the West and never by a single game. Seven-game series are the reason the NBA produces fewer shocks than a knockout sport: over seven matches, the better team usually finds a way, and luck runs out.

There is no relegation and no promotion. A club that finishes last stays in the league, keeps its television money, and is rewarded with a better chance at the next great player.

The league is stable, so here is all of it, which is what this tool draws from:

• Eastern, Atlantic. Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors.
• Eastern, Central. Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks.

One of the thirty is Canadian. Two share a city and an arena in Los Angeles, an arrangement that has produced exactly the imbalance you would expect.

The lottery, and the reason it exists

Each summer the league holds a draft, and the incoming players are assigned to clubs rather than sold to the highest bidder. Roughly speaking, the worse your season, the earlier you pick.

Which creates an obvious and corrosive incentive: lose deliberately, and be rewarded. The league's answer is the lottery, in which the fourteen clubs that missed the playoffs are entered into a weighted draw for the top picks, so that finishing last guarantees nothing. The odds have been flattened repeatedly, precisely because franchises kept working out how to game them.

This is the single deepest structural difference between American sport and the rest of the world. In England, a badly run football club is relegated and can, in principle, disappear. In the NBA, a badly run club is handed the next teenage superstar and a fresh start, and its value goes up regardless. It is a closed league that redistributes talent downward on purpose, and it is why a club can go from worst to contender in three seasons without spending anything.

Banners, droughts, and the end of dynasties

The Boston Celtics have won eighteen championships and the Los Angeles Lakers seventeen, which is most of the league's history between two clubs. Golden State have seven, Chicago six, San Antonio five.

What has happened lately is genuinely new. The NBA has now produced a different champion in each of the last eight seasons, the longest such run in its history, and the sport that was defined by dynasties, the Celtics of the 1960s, the Lakers and Celtics of the 1980s, Jordan's Bulls, the Warriors, has stopped producing them. A punitive luxury tax makes it expensive to keep a great roster together, and the players move more freely than they ever have.

The 2026 champions were the New York Knicks, who beat the San Antonio Spurs in five games for their third title and their first since 1973. Oklahoma City won the year before. Several clubs on this list have never won anything at all, and their supporters will explain this to you at length.

The league stopped being American

For most of its history the NBA was a domestic competition that occasionally imported a curiosity. A foreign player was a novelty, usually a very tall one, and the assumption that the best basketball players on earth were American went essentially unexamined.

That assumption is dead. The Most Valuable Player award, the league's highest individual honour, has in recent seasons gone repeatedly to players born outside the United States: Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece, Nikola Jokić of Serbia, Joel Embiid of Cameroon, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada. Roughly a quarter of the league now holds a passport from somewhere else, drawn from more than forty countries.

The reason is not that Americans got worse. It is that the rest of the world built coaching systems, and that European club basketball in particular teaches passing, spacing and footwork to teenagers who then arrive in the NBA already knowing how to play rather than merely how to score. Several clubs on this list now scout Europe harder than they scout American high schools, and the draft reflects it.
