You wanted a professional gamer and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. Each name comes with the game they made their reputation in, which matters more here than in any other sport, and the list runs from the pioneers of the arcade and the LAN party through to the superstars of the modern era.

The tool is the simple part. Competitive gaming is worth explaining, because the things outsiders assume about it, that the money is where the fame is, that these are kids messing about, that it is all basically one thing, are all wrong.

Esports is not one sport

Start here, because everything else follows from it. Calling somebody an esports player tells you almost nothing, in the way that calling somebody an athlete tells you almost nothing. The games are not variations on a theme. They are entirely separate disciplines with separate skills, separate scenes, separate cultures and no overlap in personnel whatsoever.

League of Legends and Dota 2 are five-a-side strategy games of extraordinary complexity, closer to team chess played at speed. Counter-Strike is a tactical shooter where a round can turn on a single bullet and where teams rehearse set pieces like a rugby side. StarCraft is a solo game of economics and warfare demanding hundreds of deliberate actions per minute. Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. are one-on-one fighting games decided in fractions of a second. Fortnite is something else again. A world champion at one of these would be a beginner at another. So when the tool hands you a name and a game, read the game first. That is the sport. The name is just the athlete.

The Unkillable Demon King

If competitive gaming has a Michael Jordan, it is Lee Sang-hyeok, known to the world as Faker. He has played mid lane for the Korean organisation T1 since 2013, and he has won the League of Legends World Championship six times, in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Nobody else has won it more than three. He is the first player to reach a hundred wins at the World Championship, the inaugural inductee into his game's Hall of Legends, and part-owner of the team he plays for.

The scale of him in South Korea is difficult to convey. He has been decorated by the President. There is a building in Seoul named after him. He appears in television commercials alongside footballers. And the most remarkable part is the longevity: he arrived as a teenager, dominated, watched an entire generation of rivals retire, and then in his late twenties won three World Championships in a row with a new team around him, the first three-peat in the history of the tournament. Draw Faker from this tool and you have drawn the most decorated player in the history of competitive gaming.

Why the prize money table lies

Here is a fact that catches people out. If you look up the all-time esports earnings list, Faker is not near the top. He is somewhere around seventieth. The leaders are almost all Dota 2 players, several of whom the average fan could not pick out of a line-up.

The reason is a quirk of one game. For years, Dota 2's world championship, The International, was funded by the players themselves: the publisher sold an in-game item pack and put a quarter of the revenue straight into the prize pool. Fans spent so much that in 2021 the pot reached forty million dollars, the largest prize in the history of any esport by an enormous margin, and the winners took home more in a weekend than most traditional athletes earn in a career. That model has since been abandoned, and recent editions have paid a small fraction of it.

So the earnings table does not measure who is best, or even who is rich. It measures which game happened to have a crowdfunded prize pool. Faker's prize winnings are modest; his salary, sponsorships and ownership stake make him vastly wealthier than the men above him on the list. When the tool draws you a Dota player, that is the context.

Retired at twenty-five

The other thing outsiders get wrong is the physical demand, because it is real and it is unforgiving. These games are played at the outer edge of human reaction time, and reaction time peaks young and declines steadily. Add a training schedule of ten or twelve hours a day, wrist and back injuries that end careers, the grind of constant travel, and a burnout rate that would alarm any sports psychologist, and the result is that professional gamers are old at twenty-four and often finished by twenty-six.

This list is therefore full of names who retired absurdly young and are now coaches, streamers or team owners, still in their twenties, already former athletes. Which is exactly what makes Faker, still playing and still winning world titles in his thirties, so extraordinary, and why he is sometimes discussed less as a great player than as a biological anomaly.

What a random esports player is good for

• Discovering a game you do not follow. Draw a name, find the game beside it, and go and watch their best series. It is the fastest introduction to a scene there is.
• Quiz and trivia prep. A random player is a strong question, and the older names from Brood War and Quake will defeat almost everybody.
• Settling the GOAT debate. Pull two players and argue, though if they play different games the argument is unwinnable, which is half the fun.
• Fantasy drafts and pools. Handing players out during a World Championship or a Major.
• Naming a character. The handles on this list are a masterclass in the form.
