The names come from a list I built by hand, and it is stacked with the greats: the players the sport's whole history runs through, from the pioneers of the 1960s to stars lighting up the league right now.

Since it is a list of legends rather than a phone book, the fun is in knowing them. So here is the game behind the names.

The kind of names in here

This is not everyone who has ever laced up. It is a curated set of the players who defined the sport, which means a random pull is almost always someone worth talking about. Some are the scorers who bent games around themselves. Some are the winners who stacked up titles. Some are the ones who simply changed what a player at their position could be. Pull a name and it comes with a story, which is the whole idea.

The eras of the pro game

Pro basketball reads in clear chapters, and the names sit inside them. The 1960s belonged to a rivalry between Bill Russell, the ultimate winner, and Wilt Chamberlain, the ultimate freak of numbers. The 1980s were carried by Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, whose duel dragged the league into the mainstream, before Michael Jordan turned the 1990s into his own decade and made basketball a global business.

The 2000s ran on Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Shaquille O'Neal, and then the game changed shape again. The modern era, from the 2010s on, is faster and shot from further out, defined early by LeBron James and then reinvented by Stephen Curry, whose three-point shooting rewired how the whole sport is played. Today's stars, the Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo types, are often huge players with guard skills, which would have looked like science fiction in Russell's day. A handful of records frame the sport, and the players who hold them are all over this list. The big one changed hands recently: LeBron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in 2023, a record Kareem had held since 1984, and Kareem got there on the back of his unblockable skyhook. On the other side of the floor, John Stockton sits alone at the top of the all-time lists for both assists and steals, by margins that look untouchable. Numbers like these are the shorthand the sport argues in, and this list is full of the people behind them.

Jordan or LeBron, and why it never ends

The greatest-of-all-time debate in basketball has mostly narrowed to two names. Michael Jordan's case is perfection under pressure: six titles, six Finals wins, never losing on the biggest stage, and an aura that still hangs over the sport. LeBron James's case is longevity and completeness: more than two decades at the top, the all-time scoring record, and a game that does everything. One side values the flawless peak, the other the sheer sustained body of work. It does not resolve, and that is what keeps it going.
