Random Basketball Team
A basketball team, picked at random
You wanted a basketball team and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number. It draws on the thirty clubs of the NBA, because when somebody asks for a basketball team without qualification, those are the names in their head.
The tool is the simple part. Which conference a club sits in and how many titles it owns are questions for the NBA team tool on this site. The better question, and the one nobody asks, is what a basketball team actually is, because the answer explains why this sport behaves so differently from every other team game.
Five people, which is why one of them can decide everything
Basketball fields the smallest team in major sport. Five. Football has eleven, cricket eleven, rugby union fifteen, baseball nine on the field with a couple of dozen in reserve, Australian rules a barely credible eighteen.
Everything follows from that number. With five players, one of them is twenty per cent of the team by headcount and considerably more than that by influence, because he can be given the ball on every trip down the floor if you like. A great basketball player touches the ball on most possessions, shoots when he chooses, and plays around three quarters of the available minutes. A great footballer might touch the ball sixty times in ninety minutes and never once in the last twenty.
So basketball is the team sport in which an individual moves the outcome furthest. Acquiring one exceptional player transforms a club immediately, in a way that signing one exceptional footballer does not, and that is why the sport's history is told through individuals and why its transfer news is treated as national news. It is a team game whose mathematics keep pushing it towards being an individual one.
Everybody attacks and everybody defends
Now the second structural fact, and it is the one that makes basketball so exhausting to play and so continuous to watch.
There are no specialists by phase. In American football, the offence walks off and an entirely different eleven men walk on to defend. In baseball, batting and fielding are separate acts performed at separate times. In basketball, a missed shot means the ball is live and you are defending, right now, having just been attacking, with no substitution, no stoppage and no time to reorganise. The same five people do both jobs, and the transition between them takes about two seconds.
This is why a player who cannot defend is a genuine liability no matter how well he scores, why coaches speak endlessly about transition, and why fitness in basketball is a matter of repeated sprinting rather than endurance. It also makes substitution unlimited and constant: a coach may change any player at any dead ball, as often as he likes, which no other major sport permits so freely.
One through five
Traditionally the five roles carry numbers, and coaches still speak in them.
- 1, the point guard. Smallest, fastest, brings the ball up and organises the attack.
- 2, the shooting guard. Scores from distance and off movement.
- 3, the small forward. The all-purpose wing, usually the most versatile athlete on the floor.
- 4, the power forward. Strong, rebounds, operates near the basket.
- 5, the centre. Tallest, protects the rim, historically scored with his back to the basket.
If you learned basketball at any point before about 2012, that is the sport you learned. A team was a height ladder, from a small organiser to a giant finisher, and each rung had a job it did not stray from.
How the positions stopped existing
Then the ladder collapsed, and the cause was a line painted on the floor.
The three-point line arrived in the NBA in 1979 and was, for thirty years, treated as a novelty, a shot you took when the clock was running out. Somebody eventually did the arithmetic. A three-point shot made a third of the time returns more points than a two-point shot made half the time. Once teams believed that, they began hunting threes, and the consequences worked backwards through the whole structure of a team.
If the most valuable shot is taken far from the basket, a centre who cannot shoot from there is standing in the way. So centres learned to shoot. If everybody can shoot, defenders cannot leave anybody, and the floor stretches. If the floor is stretched, a small quick player can drive through the gaps, so the giant is now needed for mobility rather than mass. Within a decade the traditional back-to-the-basket centre had almost vanished from the professional game, teams were routinely putting five players on the floor who could all shoot, pass and switch onto anybody, and the word for it was positionless.
The numbers survive as shorthand, and coaches still say the four and the five. But a modern basketball team is best understood as five interchangeable people with different heights, and that is a genuinely recent invention.
The clubs in this list, and the game beyond them
Be clear about what you are drawing from. The pool is the thirty NBA clubs, which is the strongest league on earth and nothing like the whole sport.
European club basketball has its own continental competition with its own economics and a rougher, more tactical style, and this site has a separate tool for it. The American college game fills arenas and decides careers before anybody turns professional. The WNBA is a full professional league. And international basketball, played under FIBA rules with a different lane, a different ball and shorter games, has repeatedly embarrassed American squads assembled from the best players in the world, because a national team that has practised together beats a collection of individuals more often than the individuals expect. A random NBA club is a fine thing to draw. It is not the sport.
Ways to put a random team to work
- Picking a club to follow. A cleaner method than adopting whoever is currently winning.
- Fantasy drafts and pools. Assigning clubs for a bracket, a sweepstake or a game.
- Settling arguments. Draw two clubs and argue which is better constructed, which forces you to think about fit rather than talent.
- Learning the sport. Draw a club, watch a quarter, and try to identify who is playing the one and who is playing the five. Increasingly you will not be able to.
- Classroom and quiz use. Draw a club and ask why the centre is standing twenty-four feet from the basket.
Basketball questions worth answering
Why does one player matter so much in basketball?
Because a team has only five players on the floor, and a great one can take the ball on most possessions and play three quarters of the minutes. No other team sport lets a single athlete influence so large a share of the outcome.
What are the five basketball positions?
Point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and centre, numbered one through five. Coaches still use the numbers, but the strict roles have largely dissolved into positionless basketball.
Why did the three-point line change everything?
Because a three made a third of the time is worth more than a two made half the time. Once teams accepted that, they hunted three-pointers, centres learned to shoot, the floor stretched, and the traditional roles broke down.
Can I pull several teams, or narrow the pick?
Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
