The commentators barely bother explaining it because the players never hesitate, and the result is that the arithmetic, which is genuinely the difficult part, is invisible to the audience. That is why the top players spend so much time on the treble twenty, the small bed worth sixty, and why leaving yourself on an awkward number is a professional embarrassment. Every player on this list can do sums faster under pressure than most of us can do them at a desk.

Nine darts

The perfect leg is nine darts. Take 501 to zero in nine throws and you have done the thing that darts holds sacred, and there are only a handful of ways to do it. The classic route is seven treble twenties followed by a treble nineteen and a double twelve, which means hitting a target the size of a postage stamp, nine times, with several thousand people screaming.

It is rare enough that television commentators lose their minds. Crowds rise on the seventh dart, and the noise as a player stands over the ninth is genuinely something to hear. The best nine-darter ever thrown may be the one where Luke Littler finished a perfect leg after his opponent, Josh Rock, had thrown six perfect darts of his own and simply never got the chance to finish. The strangest crowd in sport

The World Championship is played at Alexandra Palace in north London, universally called Ally Pally, over Christmas and New Year, and it is unlike any other event in sport. Each competitor walks on to their own chosen song, arms aloft, like a boxer. There is no physical advantage to be had, only the board and the arithmetic, and slowly the women's game is pressing in on the men's.

Sixteen titles, and the boy who changed everything

One man towers over darts. Phil Taylor won sixteen world championships, including eight in a row, and reached fourteen consecutive finals. There is no comparable figure in any other sport, nobody who so completely owned their game for so long, and it is why he was simply called The Power.

Then, in 2024, a sixteen-year-old from Warrington named Luke Littler walked into Ally Pally as a 66-to-1 outsider and reached the final. He won the thing a year later at seventeen, the youngest world champion in history, and retained it in 2026 as an eighteen-year-old, losing four sets in the entire tournament. What followed has been called Littlermania: television audiences at record highs, a generation picking up darts, and a genuine cultural moment for a sport that had been ticking along quietly for decades.
