Random Wrestler

So the tool gave you a wrestler

You wanted a professional wrestler and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. It gathers stars from across the modern business and its history, so a pull might be a current champion, an all-time legend, or a cult favourite from one of the smaller promotions.

The tool is the simple part. Pro wrestling is worth explaining, because it is not quite a sport and not quite theatre, but a remarkable thing all of its own.

Sport and spectacle

Here is the honest heart of it, the thing every fan knows and embraces: professional wrestling is scripted. The outcomes are decided in advance, the feuds are storylines, and the wrestlers are performers playing larger-than-life characters, heroes and villains in an ongoing drama. It is often called sports entertainment for exactly that reason. But do not mistake scripted for fake, because the athleticism is entirely real. These are genuine athletes throwing and being thrown, leaping from the top rope, taking real punishment night after night, and the best of them are as gifted physically as any athlete in any sport, while also being actors, stuntmen and improvisers all at once. A great wrestler makes you forget you know how it ends. So when the tool hands you a name, it is handing you a performer who lives at that strange, brilliant crossroads of sport and story.

The promotions, from WWE to the world

Wrestling is organised into rival companies, called promotions, each with its own roster of characters and its own weekly shows. The undisputed giant is WWE, the American company that turned wrestling into a global entertainment empire, and whose showpiece event, WrestleMania, is the sport's grandest stage. Its main modern challenger is AEW, founded in 2019 as a fresh, alternative home for the art, and there are proud traditions elsewhere too, above all in Japan, where wrestling is treated with an almost sporting seriousness. This list draws from across that world, which is why a pull might be a WWE main-eventer, an AEW favourite, or a Japanese legend. Each promotion has its own flavour, and part of the fun of the sport is arguing about which does it best.

The legends and the modern era

The list spans the generations. From the era that made wrestling a mainstream sensation come the true icons: Hulk Hogan, who carried it into the mainstream in the 1980s, and then the megastars of the wilder, edgier years that followed, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, and the towering Undertaker, along with the record-setting John Cena, who wrestled his farewell tour and retired at the end of 2025. And then there is the present day, led by Roman Reigns, the dominant "Tribal Chief" of the modern era, and Cody Rhodes, who completed one of wrestling's great redemption stories to become the face of the company. Draw one of the legends and you have pulled a genuine icon. Draw a current star and you have pulled someone writing the next chapter of the story.

What a random wrestler is good for

  • Dream matches. Pull two wrestlers from different eras and book the fantasy bout. Hogan against Reigns, Austin against Punk, the dream card that never was.
  • Book your own show. Draw a roster and imagine the storylines, the feuds and the card. Wrestling fans have been doing this forever.
  • A video-game roster. A quick way to pick wrestlers for a match or a season in a wrestling game.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. A random wrestler, especially an older one, is a strong question for any fan.
  • Settling a debate. Pull two names and argue the greater career or the better character.

Wrestling questions

Is professional wrestling real?

The outcomes and storylines are scripted, which is why it is called sports entertainment. But the athleticism is genuine: the wrestlers are real athletes performing physically demanding and often dangerous moves, so the performances are staged while the physical skill and risk are very real.

What are WWE and AEW?

They are wrestling promotions, the companies that run the shows. WWE is the global giant of the industry, home to the flagship event WrestleMania, while AEW, founded in 2019, is its main modern American rival. Japan also has a strong wrestling tradition of its own.

Who are the biggest wrestling legends?

Names like Hulk Hogan, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker and John Cena are among the most famous of all. In the modern era, stars such as Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes lead the way.

Can I pull several wrestlers, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
