Random Golfer
So you drew a golfer
You wanted a golfer and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. It spans the whole history of the professional game, men's and women's, from today's world number one back to the players who competed in ties and plus fours, so a pull might be a current star, a fallen great, or a name from a century ago.
The tool is the simple part. Golf is worth explaining, because its scoring is unlike anything else in sport, and because everything in a golfer's career is measured against four particular weeks of the year.
The only sport where nobody guards you
Here is the strange thing at the heart of golf. In almost every sport, someone is trying to stop you. A defender closes you down, a bowler attacks your stumps, an opponent throws punches. In golf, nobody touches you, nobody blocks you, and the ball sits perfectly still, waiting, while you take as long as you like. And it is still the hardest game in the world to play well.
That is because the opponent is the course, and behind the course is your own head. The scoring is done in strokes against a number called par, the score an expert is expected to take, and the whole sport is an exercise in not making mistakes over four days and seventy-two holes. Everyone who has played understands the particular cruelty of it: the shot is entirely yours, so the failure is entirely yours too. The greatest players are not the ones who hit the most brilliant shots. They are the ones who keep their nerve on a Sunday afternoon when the tournament is theirs to lose. Every name on this list has stood over a putt that mattered.
Four weeks that define a career
Golf plays dozens of tournaments a year, and four of them count for more than all the others put together. They are called the majors. The Masters is played every April at Augusta National, the same course every single year, which makes it unique in the sport and gives it a familiarity nothing else has, along with its green jacket for the winner. The PGA Championship follows in May. The US Open comes in June, set up to be brutally punishing, where par is a triumph. And the Open Championship, the oldest of them all, is played on the windswept links courses of Britain and Ireland in July for the Claret Jug.
A golfer's whole legacy is counted in majors, and nothing else really moves the needle. Win twenty ordinary tournaments and you have had a fine career. Win one major and you are, forever, a major champion. It is a slightly savage way to keep score, and it means dozens of superb players on this list, men who won everywhere and were world number one, ended their careers with none. When the tool hands you a golfer, the first thing anyone who knows the game will ask is how many majors they won.
Eighteen, and the man chasing it
The number that hangs over all of it is eighteen. That is how many majors Jack Nicklaus won, and it is the most anyone has ever won, and it has stood for decades. Tiger Woods spent his career chasing it, got to fifteen, and then his body and his life fell apart in public before he dragged himself back to win the Masters again in 2019, one of the great sporting comebacks. He never caught Nicklaus. Whether Tiger or Jack is the greatest is the argument golf has instead of a settled answer, and the older generation, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead and Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer, all have their advocates too.
The modern game belongs to Scottie Scheffler, an astonishingly consistent American who has spent years as world number one and has been winning majors at a rate nobody has managed since Woods. He is a young man with a lot of golf left. Behind him, the sport has been split in two by the arrival of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit, which lured away stars like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm and turned professional golf into a civil war for several years. Its future is now uncertain, its funding having been pulled, and the game is slowly stitching itself back together.
The club of six
Win all four majors at some point in your career and you have completed the career Grand Slam. In the entire modern history of the sport, only six men have done it: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and, at last, Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy's is the best story on this list. He won three of the four majors by the age of twenty-five and then spent more than a decade failing to win the Masters, watching the weight of it grow every April, collapsing on the final day in 2011, arriving each year as the man who could not finish the job. He finally did it in 2025, in a playoff, and dropped to his knees on the green. Then, having got the world off his shoulders, he went back the next year and won it again, joining Nicklaus, Faldo and Woods as the only men to defend the Masters. Scheffler now needs only the US Open to become the seventh member of the club. That is the sort of thing a random pull from this tool can be hiding.
What a random golfer is good for
- Fantasy golf and majors pools. The classic use. Everyone draws a golfer at random before a major and follows them for four days.
- Settling the GOAT debate. Draw two greats and argue it out, Nicklaus against Woods, Hogan against anybody.
- A dream fourball. Pull four names and imagine the round, across the eras, and decide who is taking the money.
- Quiz and trivia prep. A random golfer, especially from the black-and-white days, is a strong question for anyone who follows the sport.
- Picking someone to read up on. Draw a name you do not know and go find out how many majors they won, and how many they let slip.
Golf questions
Who has won the most major championships?
Jack Nicklaus, with eighteen, a record that has stood for decades. Tiger Woods is second with fifteen. The two of them are the centre of golf's greatest-player debate.
What are the four majors?
The Masters, played every year at Augusta National; the PGA Championship; the US Open; and the Open Championship, the oldest, played on links courses in Britain and Ireland. A golfer's career is measured almost entirely by how many of them they win.
What is the career Grand Slam?
Winning all four majors at some point in a career. Only six men have done it: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who completed it at the 2025 Masters after more than a decade of trying.
Can I pull several golfers, or narrow the pick?
Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
