147, and the pursuit of perfection

Snooker is played on a table twelve feet long with twenty-two balls, and the scoring is where the beauty lives. You must pot a red, worth one point, then a colour, worth between two and seven, then another red, then another colour, alternating, until the reds run out. Pot the black, the seven, after every single red, then clear the colours in order, and you finish with 147 points. That is the maximum break. It is snooker's perfect game.

Making one requires thirty-six consecutive pots with the cue ball finishing in exactly the right place every time, under television lights, in silence, while the crowd holds its breath and the tension becomes almost unbearable somewhere around the twentieth ball. Players have broken down over missing one. It is so prized that tournaments hang enormous cash bonuses on it. And unlike a hole in one in golf, there is no luck involved at all: a 147 is thirty-six perfect decisions in a row. When the tool hands you a player, the honest question is whether they have ever made one.

The Crucible, and its curse

Snooker has one holy place, and it is not glamorous. The World Championship has been played since 1977 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, a modest auditorium seating fewer than a thousand people, where the players sit within touching distance of the audience for seventeen days of the most gruelling tournament in the sport. Matches run to best of thirty-five frames in the final, over two days. It is claustrophobic, intimate and merciless, and every player on this list would trade half their career for one afternoon holding the trophy there.

And it has a curse. Since the tournament moved to the Crucible in 1977, no player winning the world title for the first time has ever successfully defended it the following year. Not one, in nearly fifty years. It has now claimed more than twenty champions, some of them all-time greats, and it has become one of the most genuinely eerie statistical oddities in sport. There is no mechanism, no reason, nothing but coincidence piled on coincidence, and every new champion arrives the next April swearing they will be the one to break it. So far, nobody has.

Seven each, and the greatest argument

The modern game has two titans and they are level. Stephen Hendry, the ice-cold Scot, won seven world titles in the 1990s, five of them in six years, and dominated with a ruthlessness the sport had never seen. Ronnie O'Sullivan, universally known as the Rocket, also has seven, but spread across more than two decades, along with a natural genius so obvious that opponents have said watching him is like being shown a different game. He plays with either hand. He once made a maximum break in five minutes and eight seconds.

Which of them is greater is snooker's endless debate: Hendry's concentrated dominance against O'Sullivan's longevity and sheer talent. O'Sullivan, still competing in his fifties, is chasing an eighth that would settle it. Around them stand the other giants of the modern era, Steve Davis, who owned the 1980s, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Mark Selby and Judd Trump. And a word for Jimmy White, the most beloved player who ever lived, who reached six world finals and lost every one of them.

The game moves east

For most of its life snooker was a British game, played in British clubs, watched by British audiences. That has changed completely, and it is the biggest story in the sport. Snooker is now enormous in China, where television audiences dwarf anything in Britain and a generation of players has grown up with the game. Ding Junhui broke the ground and became a superstar at home without ever winning the world title.

Then the wall came down. In 2025 Zhao Xintong became the first world champion from Asia, and did it having spent nearly two years banned from the sport in a match-fixing scandal that engulfed a group of Chinese players, then rebuilt himself from the amateur circuit. He duly fell to the Crucible Curse the following spring. And in 2026 Wu Yize beat Shaun Murphy in a deciding frame, 18 to 17, to become the second Asian champion and the second-youngest of all time. Draw a Chinese name from this tool and you may well have drawn the future of the sport.
