You wanted a Major League club at random, and there it is up top. One press gives you one of the 30 teams, and if you turn the number up, a handful at once. The pool is a list I keep by hand, so it is the 30 current clubs and nothing that folded or moved away years ago.

That is the whole tool. The rest of this page is the league it draws from, because a random club lands better when you know which half of the league it plays in and how long it has been chasing a title. Baseball has a longer memory than almost any sport, and it shows.

How Major League Baseball splits up

MLB is 30 teams, and the first split is an old one. Half play in the American League, half in the National League. The two ran as genuinely separate leagues for most of a century, with their own rules and their own histories, and they still keep one real difference in feel even now that they share a rulebook.

Each league is then cut into three divisions of five teams: East, Central and West. So every club has a league, a division, and four division rivals it plays a stack of games against every year. At the end of the season the playoffs pull the best from each league through several rounds, and the AL champion meets the NL champion in the World Series, a best-of-seven that crowns the lot. The two leagues only meet there and in a few scattered games, which is why an AL club and an NL club facing off still feels like a small event.

How the league settled at 30

Baseball did not always have 30 teams. For the first sixty years of the modern era it sat at 16, eight in each league, and those clubs are the old guard of the sport. From 1961 the league started adding teams in waves, reaching for new cities as the country spread west and south. The Mets, the Astros, the Royals, the Padres and plenty more all arrived in these expansion rounds.

The count crept up over the decades and stopped at 30 in 1998, when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Rays joined and rounded out the shape the league still has. No club has been added since, so 30 is where it sits.

A handful of teams also moved, which explains the odd name. The clearest live example is the Athletics, who spent decades in Oakland after earlier stops in Philadelphia and Kansas City, and have now left Oakland behind on the way to a new home. The Braves went from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta. The Dodgers and Giants famously left New York for California together in the 1950s. The clubs on the list are current, but a fair few carry another city in their past.

Twenty-seven rings, and a very long tail

World Series titles are shared out about as unevenly as sport gets, and one club sits far out on its own. The New York Yankees have won it 27 times. To put that in perspective, the next best, the St. Louis Cardinals, sit on 11, and the Cardinals are comfortably the most successful club in the National League. After those two it drops away fast, with the Red Sox, the old Athletics, and the Dodgers clustered around nine each.

The recent story belongs to Los Angeles. The Dodgers won back-to-back titles across 2024 and 2025, beating the Blue Jays in a Game 7 to seal the second, the first club to repeat as champions in a quarter of a century. The Yankees, for all their 27, have not added one since 2009.

Now the other end, which is where a random draw gets fun. Plenty of clubs are still short. The Seattle Mariners have the unwanted honour of being the only franchise never to reach a World Series at all. So when the tool hands you a team, there is a real chance you have drawn one still waiting on a ring, or in the Mariners' case, still waiting to even turn up. One neat piece of trivia to carry: the Toronto Blue Jays are the only club from outside the United States to win it, and they did it twice, in 1992 and 1993.

Where a random MLB team comes in handy

Most people who reach for a random Major League club are doing one of a few things.

• A rebuild in MLB The Show. Running the Dodgers or Yankees every year is easy mode. Draw a club at random, ideally one of the ones stuck in a title drought, and see if you can build the Pirates or the Rockies into contenders in franchise mode.
• Fantasy and pool assignments. Draft order, a survivor pool, or a "you root for whoever comes up" wager. A blind draw keeps it fair and stops everyone piling onto the same big-market clubs.
• Picking a team to follow. New to baseball and unsure where to plant your flag? A random pull is a low-stakes way to land on a club and follow a season through its ups and downs.
• Settling a matchup. Need two clubs for a debate, a video-game series, or a quick "who would win" argument? Pull a couple and let the draw set the card.
• Trivia and quizzes. Draw a club and build questions on it, its titles, its ballpark, its rivalries. Random pulls keep a quiz off the same four famous teams.

A few things baseball fans wonder

Which MLB team has won the most World Series?

The New York Yankees, by a distance, with 27. The St. Louis Cardinals are next on 11, which tells you how far clear the Yankees are. Most of that haul came in the mid-1900s, and they have not won since 2009.

Has any club never reached the World Series?

One. The Seattle Mariners are the only franchise that has never played in a World Series. A few others have reached one but never won, but the Mariners are still waiting on their first appearance.

What is the difference between the American and National League?

They began as two separate leagues and merged their operations only later, so the divide is mostly historical now. The two share a rulebook today, though small differences in style and tradition linger, and the clubs from each side still only meet in a limited set of games and in the World Series itself.

Are all the teams based in the United States?

Almost. The Toronto Blue Jays are the one Canadian club, and they are also the only team from outside the United States to win the World Series, which they did in 1992 and 1993. The other 29 are US-based.

Can I pull several clubs, or narrow the pick?
