So you drew a netball team

You wanted a netball team and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. It holds the national sides, with their wonderful names, alongside the franchises of the Australian, New Zealand, English and South African leagues.

The tool is the simple part. Netball is played by millions of people and is barely understood by anybody who has not played it, largely because from the outside it looks like a version of basketball with several important things missing. That is exactly backwards. The missing things are the sport.

A sport built entirely out of things you may not do

Here is the founding rule, and everything else follows from it. You cannot move with the ball. At all. When you catch it, the foot you landed on is planted, and you may pivot on it but not step off it, and you have three seconds to release the pass before the umpire calls held ball.

No dribbling. No running. No carrying it a single stride. So a netball team cannot advance the ball by an individual's brilliance; it can only advance it by passing, which means that every single attack is a chain of decisions made by seven people who must move into space they do not yet occupy, in order to receive a ball from somebody who is frozen. It also means the sport is played at a strange rhythm: stillness, then an explosion of movement everywhere except where the ball is. Add that contact is forbidden and that a defender must stand a full ninety centimetres away from the player with the ball, and you have a game that is astonishingly fast without anybody running with anything.

Seven players, seven territories

The second structural idea is that no netball player is allowed to go everywhere. Seven per side, and each position, marked on the bib they wear, has a defined region of the court it may enter and outside which it may not stray.

The Goal Shooter lives in one third of the court. The Goal Keeper lives in the other. The Centre may go almost everywhere but is barred from both shooting circles. Wing Attack and Wing Defence are confined to their respective halves and forbidden from the circles entirely. Step over your line and you are penalised, and the offence is called offside, though it has nothing to do with football's version. What this creates is a sport of interlocking jurisdictions, in which a player must trust six others to do their job in territory she is legally not permitted to enter. It is unlike anything else. The bib is not a label. It is a fence.

No backboard, no rebound, no forgiveness

Look at a netball hoop. It is ten feet up, the same as basketball, and there is no backboard behind it.

That removes the bank shot entirely, and it means a shot that is even slightly long simply falls away. The ring is also no wider than in basketball while the ball is roughly the same size, so the margin is unchanged and the safety net is gone. On top of that, only two of the seven players on a team, the Goal Shooter and the Goal Attack, are permitted to shoot at all, and they may only do so from inside the shooting circle. There are no three-pointers in the international game and every goal is worth one.

So a netball team funnels every attack through two people who must be near-perfect from a standing position while a defender's arms wave ninety centimetres from their face. Elite shooters convert well above ninety per cent. They have to.

The biggest sport that has never been at the Olympics

Now the fact that ought to be better known. Netball is played by millions of people across dozens of countries. It is professional, televised, and it fills arenas. It has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee since the 1990s.

It has never once been contested at the Olympic Games. Not as a full sport, not as a demonstration event in the modern era. The reasons offered are the usual ones about the size of the programme and global spread, and they are not obviously more compelling for netball than for several sports that were admitted. The consequence is that netball's own World Cup, held every four years, is the sport's summit, and that its stars have no Olympic medals to be measured by, which in turn limits their funding, their profile and their earnings. It also means netball's Commonwealth Games gold medal, first awarded in 1998, carries a weight that no other sport's does. When the tool draws you a national team, remember that its players are competing for the biggest prize their sport is permitted to have.

Where netball actually lives

The map is a map of the British Empire, which is not a coincidence: the sport was adapted from early women's basketball in England and carried outward. Australia and New Zealand are the two great powers, and the Australia against New Zealand rivalry is the sport's Ashes. England, Jamaica, South Africa, Malawi, Uganda, Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the Caribbean and southern Africa form the chasing pack, and the Jamaican and Malawian sides in particular produce shooters of frightening quality.

Australia has won more World Cups than any other nation. Beneath the national teams sit the professional leagues: Super Netball in Australia, the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand, the Netball Super League in England, and the South African competition. Those league franchises are also on this list, and the English competition in particular has been restructured in recent seasons, so treat the club names as a snapshot rather than a permanent register.

What a random netball team is good for

• World Cup sweepstakes. Draw nations for a group and follow the tournament, which is the sport's showpiece.
• Club and school selection. Drawing teams for a fixture, a bracket or a training game.
• Quiz and trivia prep. Ask which major team sport has never appeared at the Olympics. Almost nobody gets it.
• Discovering the sport. Draw a team, find a match, and watch how the ball moves when nobody is allowed to run with it.
• Settling a debate. Pull two nations and argue the greater netball tradition, which usually ends in Australia against New Zealand.

Can netball players run with the ball?

No. Once you catch it, your landing foot is planted, you may pivot on it, and you have three seconds to pass. There is no dribbling and no running with the ball, so all progress is made by passing.

Why do netball players wear letters on their bibs?
