A Champions League club, at random

You wanted a club from Europe's biggest competition and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. Because the Champions League brings together clubs from every corner of the continent, a pull might be a household giant or a champion of a country you rarely hear about.

The tool is the simple bit. The competition behind it is the most prestigious in club football, and it is worth knowing how it works and who owns it.

What the Champions League actually is

The UEFA Champions League is not a league in the everyday sense, and that trips people up. It is a season-long knockout competition that gathers the best clubs from across Europe, the champions and top finishers of every domestic league, into one tournament to crown the best club on the continent. It began in 1955 as the European Cup, a straight knockout between national champions, and was rebranded and expanded into the Champions League in 1992.

The shape now is a long opening phase where clubs play a run of matches to sort out a table, followed by a knockout bracket, and finally a one-off final at a neutral stadium, a single night that decides everything. That final, played under the competition's famous anthem, is the biggest game in club football, and winning the whole thing is the summit of the club game. So a random pull here is a pull from the pool of clubs good enough to reach that stage.

The clubs that rule Europe

One club stands above all others. Real Madrid have won the competition a staggering fifteen times, a total no one else is close to, which is why they are so synonymous with European nights. Behind them come a cluster of aristocrats: AC Milan on seven, and Bayern Munich and Liverpool on six each, all clubs whose histories are woven through the tournament.

The most recent story, though, belongs to a newer force. Paris Saint-Germain, long the great nearly-men of Europe, finally won their first Champions League in 2025 and then retained it in 2026, becoming the second French club to lift it after Marseille in 1993, the first French club to win it twice, and the first side since Real Madrid in 2018 to defend the trophy. So the competition rewards both deep history and new money, and when the tool hands you a club, it is worth asking which kind you have drawn: a serial winner, or one still chasing its first.

Why the pool is so big

Here is why the list behind this tool runs so long. Every season the Champions League draws clubs from dozens of countries, and over the years hundreds of clubs have taken part, from the Spanish and English giants down to champions of small nations who get their one shot at the big time. Rather than limit the tool to a single season's entrants, the list gathers the broad set of clubs that have graced the competition, which is why a pull can just as easily give you a European superpower as a plucky champion from a country most people could not place on a map. That range is the fun of it.

Where a random European club fits

  • A European run in Football Manager or EA FC. Take the club the draw gives you and try to conquer the continent with it. Winning it with an unfancied side is the ultimate save.
  • Dream matchups. Pull two clubs and imagine the tie, a Champions League night that never happened.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. A random European club, especially an obscure one, makes a strong question for anyone who follows the competition.
  • Discovering European football. Draw a club from a league you have never watched and go read about it.
  • Fantasy and assignments. Handing clubs to a group, a draft, or a friendly pool.

Champions League questions

Which club has won the most Champions League titles?

Real Madrid, by a distance, with fifteen. AC Milan are next on seven, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool on six each. The most recent winners are Paris Saint-Germain, who won it in 2025 and retained it in 2026.

Is the Champions League a league?

Not in the usual sense. It is a season-long knockout competition that brings together the best clubs from across Europe, ending in a single-match final at a neutral venue. It began in 1955 as the European Cup and became the Champions League in 1992.

How do clubs get into it?

By finishing near the top of their domestic league. The champions and leading clubs of each European league earn entry, with the stronger leagues getting more places, so the field is made up of the best clubs on the continent each season.

Can I pull several clubs, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
