So the tool gave you an F1 team

You wanted a Formula 1 team and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. It runs well beyond the current grid, taking in famous teams from across the sport's history, so a pull might be a team racing today or a great name from the past that has long since disappeared.

The tool is simple. What is worth knowing is why an F1 team is a stranger and grander thing than a team in most other sports.

The teams that build their own cars

Here is the thing that sets Formula 1 apart. In most sports, a team is a group of players. In F1, a team, properly called a constructor, designs and builds its own car from scratch. That is the whole game. Two teams can have equally brilliant drivers, but if one has built a faster car, it will win, so the sport is as much a contest of engineering and money and clever ideas as it is of driving. Hundreds of people back at the factory, aerodynamicists and engine designers and strategists, are as important to the result as the two drivers on track. And there are two championships every year, not one: the Drivers' title for the best driver, and the Constructors' title for the best team, which is the one the factories care about most. So when the tool hands you a team, it is handing you an entire engineering operation, not just a badge.

Ferrari, and the great constructors

One team stands above all others in stature. Scuderia Ferrari is the oldest and most iconic team in Formula 1, the only one to have raced since the very first season in 1950, and its passionate following around the world is unlike anything else in the sport, even in the long spells when it is not winning. Around Ferrari sit the other giants: Mercedes, who won eight Constructors' titles in a row in the 2010s, Red Bull, who ruled the early 2020s, and McLaren, the great old name that stormed back to the front to win the title in recent seasons. The list also carries the ghosts of the sport, wonderful lost teams like Lotus, Williams in its pomp, Brabham and Tyrrell, names that shaped the sport and then faded. Draw one of the modern powers and you have a winner. Draw one of the fallen greats and you have a piece of F1 history.

A grid that never stands still

Formula 1 teams come and go, merge and rebrand, more often than you might think, which is exactly why this list runs so deep. A team that was Sauber becomes Alfa Romeo becomes, now, the works Audi squad; a team called Toro Rosso becomes AlphaTauri becomes Racing Bulls. And the grid is expanding: 2026 brought one of the biggest shake-ups in the sport's history, with a huge change to the rules, the German giant Audi arriving as a full manufacturer, and Cadillac joining as a brand-new American team, taking the grid to eleven. So the current names on this list are a snapshot that keeps shifting. Rather than freeze one season, the list gathers the teams that have made F1 what it is, past and present, which is why a pull can be a team on today's grid or one that has not raced in decades.

Where a random F1 team fits

  • A management save in an F1 video game. Take the team the draw gives you and try to build it into a title winner, the heart of the sport's management games.
  • Fantasy F1 inspiration. A prompt for picking constructors or settling who to back for the season.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. A random team, especially a lost one from the past, is a strong question for anyone who follows F1.
  • Picking a team to follow. New to the sport? Let the draw hand you a team and follow their season.
  • Settling a debate. Pull two teams from different eras and argue the greater one.

F1 team questions

What is a constructor in F1?

It is the proper name for an F1 team, and it reflects that the team designs and builds its own car. The best team over a season wins the Constructors' Championship, which runs alongside the Drivers' Championship and is the title the factories prize most.

Which is the most famous F1 team?

Scuderia Ferrari, by most measures. It is the only team to have competed in every season since 1950, and it carries a global following unmatched in the sport. Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren are the other great modern powers.

What changed for 2026?

A great deal. The 2026 season brought a major overhaul of the rules along with two new names: Audi took over the former Sauber team as a full manufacturer, and Cadillac joined as a brand-new American team, expanding the grid to eleven teams.

Can I pull several teams, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
