So you drew a footballer

You wanted a footballer and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I put together by hand. This is not a squad of current players. It is a gathering of the greatest names the sport has produced, across every era, position and continent, so a pull might be a modern superstar, a black-and-white legend, or someone in between.

A list like this exists mostly to start arguments, so let me start the biggest one.

The greatest of all time, and the argument about it

No debate in football is more endless than who the greatest player of all time is, and this list is stocked with every name anyone brings to it. For a generation the argument has been Lionel Messi against Cristiano Ronaldo, two players who between them dominated the sport for nearly twenty years and made everyone else look ordinary. Messi holds a record eight Ballon d'Or awards, the prize for the world's best player, and in 2022 he finally won the World Cup, the one line his critics still held against him. Ronaldo has five Ballon d'Ors, more goals than any man in the game's history, and a body of work across four countries that may never be matched. Both are, remarkably, still playing as this is written, in the twilight of careers that redrew what was possible.

But the argument did not start with them. Before Messi and Ronaldo, the debate was Pelé, the Brazilian who won three World Cups, against Diego Maradona, the Argentine who dragged an ordinary team to the trophy almost single-handed in 1986. Pull any of those four from this tool and you have drawn a contender for the very top. Pull anyone else and you have drawn someone who, on their day, could stand alongside them.

Every era on one list

The real pleasure of this list is that it collapses a century of football into one pool. There are the old masters, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Eusébio, and the mesmerising Garrincha, names from grainy footage who defined the early game. There is the golden middle, Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer reinventing how football was played, Michel Platini and Zico and Marco van Basten lighting up the eighties. There are the icons of the modern era, Zinédine Zidane, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo Nazário. And there is the present, because the game never stops producing them: Kylian Mbappé, the teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, the relentless Erling Haaland, all carrying the torch as Messi and Ronaldo hand it on. Draw at random and you never know which decade you will land in.

Not just goalscorers

It would be easy to fill a greats list with forwards, but football is won all over the pitch, and this one reflects that. There are the great goalkeepers, Lev Yashin, the only keeper ever to win the Ballon d'Or, and Gianluigi Buffon, and Iker Casillas. There are the defenders who were artists in their own right, Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi and Fabio Cannavaro. There are the midfield conductors who made their teams tick, Xavi and Andrés Iniesta and Andrea Pirlo. And the list reaches across the whole world, taking in African icons like George Weah and Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o, and Asian trailblazers like Son Heung-min and Hidetoshi Nakata. So a random pull might not be a famous scorer at all. It might be the best there ever was at stopping them.

What a random footballer is good for

  • Building a dream team. Pull a handful and see what side you can assemble, an all-time five-a-side or a full eleven across the eras.
  • Settling, or starting, the GOAT debate. Draw two greats and argue who was better. This list is built for exactly that.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. A random legend, especially an older one, makes a strong question for anyone who knows their football history.
  • A prompt to go learn. Draw a name you do not know and go read about them. There are gems on this list you may never have seen play.
  • Fantasy and assignments. Handing players to a group, a draft, or a friendly pool.

Football player questions

Who is the greatest footballer of all time?

There is no settled answer, which is why the debate is so enjoyable. The modern argument centres on Lionel Messi, with a record eight Ballon d'Ors and a World Cup, and Cristiano Ronaldo, the game's all-time top scorer. The older debate pits Pelé, a three-time World Cup winner, against Diego Maradona.

What is the Ballon d'Or?

It is football's most prestigious individual award, given each year to the best player in the world. Lionel Messi has won it a record eight times, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo on five.

Does the list include current players?

It includes the modern greats alongside the legends of the past, so you will find current stars like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in the same pool as Pelé and Cruyff. It is an all-time list rather than a current squad.

Can I pull several players, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
