Random Ice Hockey Team
So you drew an ice hockey team
You wanted an ice hockey team and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. Some of the names will be familiar. A good many will not, and that is the point of this particular tool.
The tool is the simple part. If you want the NHL specifically, this site has a tool for exactly that. What this list does instead is take the honest view that ice hockey is played seriously across a dozen countries, and that the best league is not the only league.
This list is not one league
Draw a few names and you will notice the pool is layered. The North American clubs are the thirty-two of the NHL. Then come the Russian and Kazakh clubs of the Kontinental Hockey League. Then the Swedish sides, the Finnish sides, the Swiss and the German.
These teams cannot be ranked against each other in any clean way, because they do not meet. There is no European Cup of hockey that the NHL enters. A Swedish champion and a Colorado champion simply never play, except occasionally in a pre-season exhibition that nobody takes seriously. So treat the list as a map of where professional hockey is played rather than a table of who is best. The NHL is unquestionably the strongest league, gathering the finest players from every country on this list, and it is a North American competition that plays a slightly different game.
The ice is a different size, and it changes the sport
Here is the fact that explains most of the difference in style, and it is invisible on television because there is nothing to compare against.
An NHL rink is two hundred feet by eighty-five. The international rink, used across Europe and at the Olympics for most of the sport's history, is roughly the same length but about fifteen feet wider. Fifteen feet does not sound like much. It is enormous. It adds a large amount of open ice in the corners and along the boards, which means a defender can be beaten by skating rather than only by passing, and it means a forechecker cannot pin an opponent against the wall so easily.
The consequence is two dialects of the same sport. North American hockey, played in a narrower box, is faster to the boards, more physical, more direct. European hockey, historically, was a game of puck possession, of swinging back and regrouping, of skating into space that the NHL simply does not have. Players who cross over take time to adjust in either direction, and coaches will tell you the transition is mental rather than physical. Some European leagues have since narrowed their rinks to NHL dimensions, which is its own small tragedy.
Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany
The clubs in this list from those four countries are not feeder teams. They are professional institutions with long histories, passionate followings and, in the Swiss case, some of the largest attendances anywhere in the sport outside Canada.
Sweden's league has produced a remarkable share of the NHL's best defencemen. Finland, a country of five and a half million, has become the most consistent producer of elite goaltenders in the world, and has won the Olympic tournament and world championships in the face of every demographic argument against it. Switzerland has a domestic competition that pays well enough to keep good players home. Germany's clubs sell out. A young Finn or Swede does not have to leave to make a living, which is a very different structure from the one that funnels every North American teenager toward a single league.
The KHL, and the politics that came with it
The Kontinental Hockey League was founded to be a genuine rival to the NHL: Russian money, big salaries, clubs across Russia and into Kazakhstan, Belarus, and at one point Finland, Latvia, Slovakia and China.
It never quite reached the NHL's standard and it has spent much of its life dealing with problems the NHL does not have, from clubs collapsing mid-season to long-distance travel across nine time zones. Since 2022 its international character has largely collapsed. Foreign clubs withdrew, Helsinki's Jokerit among them, and Russian national teams have been suspended from international hockey. That is why this list contains Jokerit twice, once with a note that it used to be a KHL club, which it no longer is. The KHL remains a strong league. It is also now, effectively, a domestic one, and a random pull from it hands you a club whose competitive world has narrowed considerably.
Where the players actually come from
One last thing to hold in your head when the tool draws you a club. Roughly half of NHL players are Canadian, in a league that is mostly American by geography. The rest come overwhelmingly from the countries whose clubs fill the back half of this list: the United States, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Czechia and Slovakia.
Hockey's talent map is astonishingly narrow. It is a sport that requires ice, expensive equipment and a great deal of childhood, and it is played at the top level by people from perhaps eight countries. That is what makes the international tournaments so intense, and it is why the Olympic tournament matters so much more in hockey than in most sports, on the occasions when the NHL permits its players to attend.
What a random ice hockey team is good for
- Discovering the sport beyond one league. Draw a Swiss or Finnish club and go and watch a match on the wide ice.
- Quiz and trivia prep. Ask how much wider an international rink is. Almost nobody knows it differs at all.
- Fantasy drafts and pools. Assigning clubs for a bracket or a game across leagues.
- Settling a debate. Pull two clubs and argue the greater institution, which is more interesting when they have never played.
- Teaching and school projects. Draw a club and research why hockey is elite in so few countries.
Ice hockey questions
Is a European rink bigger than an NHL rink?
Wider, by about fifteen feet, though similar in length. That extra width creates open ice in the corners and produces a more possession-based style, which is why players take time to adjust when they cross over.
What leagues are in this list?
The NHL, the Kontinental Hockey League, and the leading clubs of Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Germany. They do not play each other, so the list is a map of the sport rather than a ranking.
Is the KHL still an international league?
Far less than it was. Foreign clubs including Helsinki's Jokerit withdrew after 2022, and Russian national teams have been suspended from international competition, leaving the KHL largely a Russian and Kazakh league.
Can I pull several teams, or narrow the pick?
Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a keyword the entry has to contain, which is handy for separating leagues.
