So the tool gave you an MMA fighter

You wanted a mixed martial arts fighter and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. It gathers the greats and the notable names of the sport, from its wild early days to the modern champions, so a pull might be a current title-holder, a retired legend, or a pioneer from the sport's beginnings.

The tool is the simple part. MMA is the youngest of the major combat sports, and its whole reason for existing is one of the great questions in fighting.

Where every martial art meets

Mixed martial arts was born from a simple, irresistible question: if a boxer fought a wrestler, or a karate master fought a jiu-jitsu expert, who would actually win? For most of history there was no way to find out, because the different martial arts never truly met. MMA was the answer. It throws out the rulebook of any single style and lets fighters use almost everything, punches and kicks standing up, wrestling to drag a fight to the floor, and grappling and chokeholds on the ground. The early contests really were style against style, and the lesson they taught was decisive: to win, you cannot be a master of just one art. The modern fighter has to do it all, blending striking and wrestling and submissions into a single complete game. That is what makes MMA so gripping, and it is why every fighter on this list is, in effect, a jack of all the fighting trades.

The UFC and the rise of a sport

The home of the sport is the UFC, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which began in 1993 as a raw, no-holds-barred tournament and grew, over three decades, into one of the biggest sports promotions on the planet. Its fighters compete in a cage, the famous eight-sided Octagon, across a dozen weight divisions for men and women, and its champions are global stars. The UFC is not the only show in town, and other promotions around the world have produced their own greats, several of whom feature on this list, but it is the undisputed giant of the sport and the stage where most of the biggest names have made their reputations. So when the tool hands you a fighter, the odds are you have drawn someone who fought under those bright Octagon lights.

The greatest of all time

The greatest-fighter debate in MMA has a clear front-runner. Jon Jones is, by most measures and most experts, considered the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, a champion in two weight classes who dominated for well over a decade before retiring in 2025. Close behind him are the icons: Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired without ever losing a fight, the brilliant Georges St-Pierre, and the long-reigning Anderson Silva. Among the women, Amanda Nunes stands alone, the only fighter to hold two titles at once and beat every other great of her era. And the modern era has its own king in Islam Makhachev, widely rated the best pound-for-pound fighter going today. Draw one of those from the tool and you have pulled an all-time great. Draw anyone else and you have pulled a fighter who tested themselves against the very best.

What a random MMA fighter is good for

  • Dream fights across the eras. Pull two fighters and argue the fantasy matchup, a pioneer against a modern champion, a striker against a grappler.
  • Settling the GOAT debate. Draw two greats and make the case for each. This list is built for that argument.
  • Quiz and trivia prep. A random fighter, especially one from the early days, is a strong question for any MMA fan.
  • Picking a fighter to read up on. Draw a name you do not know and go discover a career.
  • Fantasy and assignments. Handing fighters out for a game, a draft, or a friendly pool.

MMA questions

Who is the greatest MMA fighter of all time?

Jon Jones is the most common answer, a two-division champion who dominated the sport for more than a decade before retiring in 2025. Others point to the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, or, among the women, Amanda Nunes.

What is mixed martial arts?

It is a full-contact combat sport that combines techniques from many martial arts, allowing striking while standing, wrestling to take a fight to the floor, and grappling and submissions on the ground. To succeed, a fighter has to be skilled in all of these, not just one.

What is the UFC?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest MMA promotion in the world. It began in 1993 and grew into a major global sport, with fighters competing in a cage known as the Octagon across a dozen weight divisions for men and women.

Can I pull several fighters, or narrow the pick?

Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
