You wanted a club from Major League Soccer and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand. MLS keeps adding clubs, so the list grows as the league does, and a pull might be a founding side or one of the newcomers.

The tool is the simple part. The league behind it is the most interesting oddity in world football, because it does almost everything differently from the rest of the sport.

Football, the American way

Here is the thing to understand, and it is the one that surprises people coming from European football. MLS is a closed league. There is no promotion and no relegation. Finish bottom and you stay exactly where you are, and there is no lower division to fall into and no scrappy club climbing up to take your place. Instead the league runs on the American model of franchises, where new clubs join by being invited in and paying a hefty fee, not by winning their way up a pyramid.

The whole shape follows from that. The clubs are split into an Eastern and a Western Conference, and the season is not decided by who finishes top of a single table. The team with the best regular-season record wins a trophy called the Supporters' Shield, but the real prize, the MLS Cup, is settled by a knockout playoff at the end of the year, like the Super Bowl or the World Series. There is a salary cap too, meant to stop the richest clubs simply buying everything. If you have only ever watched European football, almost none of this will feel familiar, and that is the point.

The Beckham rule, and then Messi

The salary cap left MLS with a problem: how do you attract global superstars when you cannot pay them superstar wages? The answer, in 2007, was the Designated Player rule, quickly nicknamed the Beckham rule, because it was written to let the LA Galaxy sign David Beckham. It lets each club sign a small number of marquee players whose wages sit outside the cap, and it opened the door to a parade of famous names winding down their careers in America, from Thierry Henry and Steven Gerrard to Zlatan Ibrahimović and Wayne Rooney.

And then came the big one. In 2023 Lionel Messi, fresh from winning the World Cup, joined Inter Miami, and it changed everything. He dragged Miami to the first major trophy in the club's history, the crowds and the television audiences swelled, and suddenly the whole world was watching a league it had spent years ignoring. Draw Inter Miami from this tool and you have pulled the club that Messi turned into the centre of the football universe. Draw one of the others and you have pulled a side plotting how to beat him.

A young league still growing

MLS is young by the standards of world football. It kicked off in 1996, born out of the United States hosting the 1994 World Cup, and it has expanded steadily ever since, passing thirty clubs across the United States and Canada as new franchises keep being added. The list behind this tool holds all thirty, and the league has paused expansion until after the 2026 World Cup, so a pull from it is a pull from the whole league. The timing could hardly be better for the league, either: with the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, football in North America is having its biggest moment yet, and MLS is riding the wave.

What a random MLS club is good for

• A save in Football Manager or EA FC. Take the club the draw gives you and build an MLS dynasty. The salary cap and the playoff format make it a very different challenge from a European save.
• Picking a club to follow. With the World Cup coming to North America, it is a great time to adopt an MLS side. Let the draw choose it and go from there.

• Matchups and debates. Pull two clubs and argue the better side, Messi's Miami against the field.

MLS questions

Does MLS have promotion and relegation?

No. MLS is a closed league that runs on the American franchise model, so no club is relegated and none is promoted into it. New clubs join by invitation and by paying an expansion fee, not by winning their way up from a lower division.

Which club does Lionel Messi play for?

Inter Miami, which he joined in 2023. He led them to the first major trophy in the club's history and turned MLS into a league the whole world started watching.

What is the MLS Cup?
