Random NHL Team
So the tool picked you an NHL team
You wanted a National Hockey League club and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from the thirty-two teams that currently play in it. The set is complete and current, so a random pull is a true draw from the whole league.
The tool is the simple part. The NHL has a structure that rewards a few minutes of explanation, and a history that is stranger and more concentrated than the other North American leagues.
How the NHL is carved up
Thirty-two clubs, split into two conferences of sixteen, and each conference into two divisions of eight. The Eastern Conference holds the Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions. The Western Conference holds the Central and Pacific.
Everybody plays eighty-two games. Sixteen teams reach the playoffs, three from each division plus two wild cards per conference, and then they play four rounds of best-of-seven, which means a champion must win sixteen games across two months of the most physically punishing postseason in professional sport. The trophy is the Stanley Cup, which is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, predates the league itself, and is the only major championship trophy that is not remade each year. The same one gets handed over, and every winning player's name is engraved on it, which is why it now stands about three feet tall and has to have its oldest bands retired to a museum.
All 32 clubs, division by division
The league is stable, so here is the whole thing, which is what this tool draws from:
- Eastern, Atlantic. Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs.
- Eastern, Metropolitan. Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals.
- Western, Central. Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Utah Mammoth, Winnipeg Jets.
- Western, Pacific. Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights.
Note the Utah entry. That franchise spent nearly three decades in Arizona as the Coyotes, moved to Salt Lake City in 2024, played a season as the Utah Hockey Club while its supporters voted on a name, and became the Mammoth in 2025. Seven of the thirty-two are Canadian, which is fewer than most Canadians would like.
The Original Six, and everything after
For twenty-five years, from 1942 until 1967, this league consisted of six teams. Six. The Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks played each other, over and over, for a quarter of a century.
Nothing else in North American sport has that kind of concentrated intimacy in its past, and it is why the rivalries between those six are of a different order to anything the expansion clubs have built. Every one of them still exists, still under the same name, still in the same city. Then in 1967 the league doubled overnight, and it has been expanding ever since: into California, into the American south, into the desert, and most recently to Seattle and Vegas. The Golden Knights reached the Stanley Cup Final in their first season of existence and won the thing in their sixth, which was not supposed to be possible and quietly embarrassed several century-old franchises.
Twenty-four Cups, and a long thirst
The Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup twenty-four times, which is more than any club in any of the four major North American leagues has won anything. Toronto have thirteen and Detroit eleven, though Toronto's most recent came in 1967, a drought that is now the sport's running joke and its most reliable source of anguish.
The modern game is far less predictable. The Carolina Hurricanes won the Cup in 2026, beating Vegas in six games for their second title and their first since 2006. Florida had won the two before that and then failed to reach the playoffs at all the following season, becoming the first back-to-back champions to miss out since 1970. That is a league with a hard salary cap doing what a hard salary cap does. Around a third of the current clubs have never won it, and several of them are old enough to feel that keenly.
The country that invented it cannot win it
Seven clubs in this league are Canadian, in the country where the sport was invented, where roughly half of the league's players were born, and where hockey is not a pastime but a component of the national identity.
No Canadian club has won the Stanley Cup since Montreal in 1993. That is more than thirty years. Canadian teams have reached the Final repeatedly in that time and lost every one of them, sometimes agonisingly, and the drought has become a genuine national preoccupation, discussed in newspapers with the seriousness usually reserved for the economy.
There is no conspiracy. There are twenty-five American clubs and seven Canadian ones, taxes differ, weather differs, and the arithmetic of a hard salary cap in a thirty-two-team league says a specific city should expect to win about once every three decades anyway. Knowing that does not appear to help anybody in Toronto. If the tool draws you a Canadian club, you have pulled a team carrying an entire country's unresolved grievance.
Where a random NHL team comes in handy
- Picking a club to follow. An honest method, and better than adopting whoever is currently good.
- Playoff sweepstakes and pools. Draw clubs for a group and follow them through four rounds.
- Fantasy drafts. Assigning teams for a bracket, a keeper league or a game.
- Quiz and trivia prep. Ask somebody to name the Original Six. Most people manage four.
- Video games and table hockey. Drawing sides so nobody gets to choose the best roster.
Things people ask about the NHL
How many teams are in the NHL?
Thirty-two, split into two conferences of sixteen and four divisions of eight. Seven of them are based in Canada.
Which team has won the most Stanley Cups?
The Montreal Canadiens, with twenty-four. Toronto have thirteen and Detroit eleven. Carolina are the current holders, having beaten Vegas in the 2026 Final.
What are the Original Six?
Montreal, Toronto, Boston, New York Rangers, Detroit and Chicago, the only six clubs in the league from 1942 to 1967. All six still exist under the same names in the same cities.
Can I pull several teams, or narrow the pick?
Both. Raise the number for a few at once, with none repeating in a single pull, and use the text boxes to narrow things, such as a starts-with letter or a keyword the name has to contain.
