You wanted a cycling team and the tool up top gives you one, or several if you raise the number, from a list I keep by hand of professional road squads.

The tool is the simple part. And I am going to be straight with you about this particular list, because the honest thing to say about it is also the most interesting thing about the sport: a great many of the teams in it no longer exist. That is not sloppiness. That is professional cycling.

A team from nowhere, supported by nobody

Ask what makes a football club. It has a city. A ground. Supporters whose fathers supported it. A name that has survived two world wars and cannot be sold.

A professional cycling team has none of these. It has no stadium, because the sport is played on public roads. It has no city, because it races across a continent. It has no supporters in any meaningful sense, because nobody's grandfather followed Alpecin-Deceuninck. What it has is a sponsor, and the team is named after that sponsor, and when the sponsorship ends, the team is renamed, or it simply stops. Riders sign two-year contracts and move on. A squad that wins the Tour de France in July can be dissolved in December because a company has changed its marketing strategy. Cycling teams are the least permanent institutions in professional sport, and the sport has organised itself around that fact rather than fighting it.

The same team, four names

Team Sky was founded in 2010 with British broadcasting money and proceeded to win the Tour de France repeatedly, becoming the most powerful and most resented squad in the peloton. In 2019 Sky withdrew, a chemicals company stepped in, and the identical team, same riders, same buses, same headquarters, became Ineos Grenadiers. In 2026 it acquired another backer and races as Netcompany Ineos. It never moved. It never changed hands in any sporting sense. Only the name on the jersey changed, three times, and each time the sport filed it away as a different team.

The same has happened to almost everything in the peloton. LottoNL-Jumbo became Jumbo-Visma, which now races as Visma-Lease a Bike. Mitchelton-Scott is now Jayco AlUla. BORA-Argon 18 became Bora-Hansgrohe and is now Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. Alpecin-Fenix races as Alpecin-Premier Tech, AG2R La Mondiale as Decathlon CMA CGM, Israel Cycling Academy as NSN Cycling, and Lotto and Intermarché merged into a single squad for 2026. Team Sunweb passed through Team DSM and now races as Picnic-PostNL. Nothing about the racing changed. Only the logo on the shorts.

Why this list reads like a graveyard

And then the ones that did not survive at all, which is the harsher half of the story. IAM Cycling folded. CCC folded. Katusha folded. Dimension Data, which became Qhubeka, a team with a genuine social mission delivering bicycles to South African schoolchildren, ran out of money and disappeared in the middle of a pandemic while its riders were still racing. Gazprom-RusVelo was dissolved when its Russian sponsor became untenable in 2022.

Each of those was a going concern with thirty professional athletes, a support staff, a fleet of vehicles, and a place at the biggest races in the world, and each ceased to be within a year of losing a single company's cheque. There is no relegation and no bankruptcy administration and no supporters' trust to buy the club. There is just an announcement in October and thirty riders looking for work. That is what this list is showing you, and the fact that a generator can hand you a team that dissolved five years ago is, in its way, an accurate representation of the sport.

The team that exists to prove a point

One entry deserves separating out. Team Novo Nordisk is a professional cycling team on which every single rider has type 1 diabetes.

The sponsor makes insulin, which is what makes it commercially explicable. What it does not explain is what the team is for. Its riders race the professional calendar while managing blood glucose through six hours of maximal exertion, monitoring continuously, eating and injecting on the bike. They do not win very much. That is not the point. The team exists so that a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can watch a bike race and see somebody with their condition riding in it, and the riders will tell you that is why they signed. In a sport whose teams are essentially advertisements, it is worth noticing the one that is advertising something worth having.

How the teams are ranked

A word on the structure, because it explains which teams appear at which races. The top division is the WorldTeams, currently eighteen of them, who are entitled and obliged to ride the biggest races on the calendar. Below sit the ProTeams, who race a lesser calendar and receive invitations to the Grand Tours, with the best of them promoted automatically.

Promotion and relegation between the two exists, and it is decided on points accumulated over three years, which produces the sport's strangest spectacle: teams at the bottom of the table chasing meaningless points in obscure races in October, because relegation means losing the automatic right to ride the Tour de France, and losing that means losing the sponsor, and losing the sponsor means the team is gone. The list above mixes both divisions, along with several teams that were in neither by the time you read this.

What a random cycling team is good for

• Grand Tour sweepstakes. Draw teams for a group and follow them through three weeks.
• Fantasy drafts and pools. Assigning squads to a group for a game or a bracket.
• Quiz and trivia prep. Ask what Team Sky is called now. It is a harder question than it sounds.
• Teaching and school projects. Draw a team and research what happened to its sponsor. It is a lesson in how sport is financed.
• Settling a debate. Pull two teams and argue the greater squad, then work out whether they ever existed at the same time.

Team questions

Why do cycling teams keep changing their names?

Because the name is the sponsor. Teams have no city, ground or traditional supporters, so when a backer leaves the team is renamed or folds. Team Sky became Ineos Grenadiers and now races as Netcompany Ineos, with no change to the team itself.

Do cycling teams really disappear?

Regularly. IAM, CCC, Katusha, Qhubeka and Gazprom-RusVelo all ceased to exist within a year of losing their sponsor, taking thirty professional riders' jobs with them each time.

What is Team Novo Nordisk?

A professional team on which every rider has type 1 diabetes. It exists largely to demonstrate that the condition need not prevent elite sport, and its riders manage blood glucose while racing the professional calendar.
