How it works

The tool uses your device's camera to read the QR code live, and decodes it in your browser, showing the link or text it holds. The camera feed is processed entirely on your device; nothing is sent to a server. You will need to grant camera permission, which your browser asks for when you start.

No app, and a safety habit

Most modern phones read QR codes straight from the built-in camera, so why a scanner tool? Two reasons. First, it works anywhere there is a camera and a browser, including the places the native camera does not help: a laptop or desktop with a webcam, or an older phone whose camera does not scan codes. Second, and more useful than it sounds, it lets you see what a code contains before you act on it.

That second point is a small but worthwhile safety habit. Not every QR code is harmless, some are placed by scammers to send people to dodgy sites, and the trouble is that a code gives no hint of where it leads until you open it. Scanning it here shows you the actual destination, the link, in plain view, so you can decide whether it looks legitimate before going there. Do I need an app?

Can I check a link before opening it?
