What this does

So a recipe gives a small amount in teaspoons, and you would rather weigh it for accuracy, which matters most with spices and raising agents. This converter turns teaspoons into grams. Enter the teaspoons, pick the ingredient, and it gives you the weight. The ingredient matters, because a teaspoon of one thing weighs differently from a teaspoon of another.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Pick the spoon type, US or Imperial teaspoons, or tablespoons.
  3. Choose grams, milligrams, or kilograms, pick the ingredient, then press Calculate.

Leave it on US teaspoons and grams for the everyday answer.

Why the ingredient matters

A teaspoon is a measure of volume, and a gram is a measure of weight. Density is what links them, the weight packed into that small spoon. A dense ingredient gives more grams per teaspoon, a light one fewer.

A teaspoon of water weighs about 5 grams. A light powder weighs less per teaspoon, while a dense liquid weighs more. Because a teaspoon is so small, these differences show up quickly, which is exactly why the tool asks which ingredient you mean. Flour, as ever, is the least consistent, so take its figure as a guide.

How the conversion works

The tool turns your teaspoons into a volume in millilitres, then multiplies by the density to get the weight:

grams = teaspoons × ml per teaspoon × density

A US teaspoon is about 4.93 millilitres, and water has a density of 1, so 2 teaspoons of water is 2 × 4.93 × 1, which is about 9.9 grams. Denser ingredients weigh more for the same teaspoons, lighter ones less.

Questions people ask

How many grams are in a teaspoon?

It depends on the ingredient. A teaspoon of water is about 5 grams, while light powders weigh less and dense liquids weigh more.

Why does the ingredient matter so much here?

Because a teaspoon is tiny, so a difference in density changes the weight quickly. Picking the right ingredient keeps a small measure from being noticeably off.

Can I weigh tablespoons too?

Yes. The spoon dropdown includes tablespoons, so you can convert tablespoons of an ingredient to grams as well.
