What this does

So a recipe gives a small amount in grams, a spice, some salt, a raising agent, and you would rather measure it with a teaspoon. This converter turns grams into teaspoons. Enter the amount, pick the ingredient, and it tells you the teaspoons. It can give tablespoons too, and it handles both US and Imperial spoons.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount, and choose grams, milligrams, or kilograms.
  2. Pick the spoon you want, US or Imperial teaspoons, or tablespoons.
  3. Choose the ingredient, then press Calculate.

For the everyday answer, leave it on US teaspoons.

Why the ingredient matters

Grams are a weight and teaspoons are a volume, and density is what connects them. A dense ingredient packs more grams into a teaspoon, while a light one packs fewer, so the same weight can be a very different number of teaspoons depending on the ingredient.

A teaspoon of water weighs about 5 grams, so 10 grams of water is roughly 2 teaspoons. A light powder weighs less per teaspoon, so the same 10 grams fills more. This is exactly why the tool asks which ingredient you mean before it answers.

How the conversion works

The tool turns your weight into a volume by dividing by the density, then turns that volume into spoons by dividing by the size of one teaspoon. Together:

teaspoons = (grams ÷ density) ÷ millilitres per teaspoon

A US teaspoon is about 4.93 millilitres. So 10 grams of water becomes 10 millilitres, then 10 ÷ 4.93, which is about 2 teaspoons. There are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon if you switch the spoon type.

Questions people ask

How many grams are in a teaspoon?

It depends on the ingredient. A teaspoon of water is about 5 grams, while light powders weigh less and dense liquids weigh more.

Why does the ingredient matter so much for small amounts?

Because a teaspoon is tiny, so a difference in density shows up quickly. Picking the right ingredient keeps a small measure from being noticeably off.

How many teaspoons make a tablespoon?

Three. So three teaspoons of an ingredient weigh about the same as one tablespoon of it.
