What this does

So you have a small amount in millilitres, a little vanilla extract, a measure of flavouring, and you want it in teaspoons. This converter gives you that. Enter the millilitres and it tells you the teaspoons. It can also give tablespoons, and it handles both US and Imperial spoons.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount, and choose millilitres or litres.
  2. Pick the spoon you want, US or Imperial teaspoons, or tablespoons.
  3. Press Calculate.

No ingredient needed, since both millilitres and teaspoons measure volume.

How the conversion works

It is your millilitres divided by the size of one teaspoon:

teaspoons = millilitres ÷ millilitres per teaspoon

A US teaspoon is about 4.93 millilitres, so 5 millilitres is just over 1 teaspoon, and 15 millilitres is about 3, which is also 1 tablespoon. Switch the output to tablespoons and you get a third as many.

Good to know

A metric teaspoon is defined as exactly 5 millilitres, while the US teaspoon the tool uses is slightly smaller at about 4.93 millilitres. That is why 5 millilitres lands at just over 1 US teaspoon rather than a clean 1. A small gap, but it is where the decimal comes from.

Imperial teaspoons are a little larger than US ones, so choosing Imperial lowers the count for the same millilitres. Most modern recipes mean US teaspoons.

Questions people ask

How many teaspoons is 5 ml?

Just over 1 US teaspoon, since the US teaspoon is about 4.93 millilitres. On the metric teaspoon of 5 millilitres, it is exactly 1.

How many teaspoons is 10 ml?

About 2 US teaspoons. Useful for extracts and flavourings measured in small amounts.

How many teaspoons make a tablespoon?

Three. So 15 millilitres is about 3 teaspoons, which is the same as 1 tablespoon.
