What this does

So you are scaling a recipe down, or you just do not have a clean cup measure to hand, and you would rather work in tablespoons. This converter does that. Enter your cups and it tells you how many tablespoons that is. It can give you teaspoons too, and it lets you switch between US and Imperial spoons, since those are not the same size either.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of cups.
  2. Pick your cup type, US Legal (240 ml) or Imperial (284 ml).
  3. Choose the spoon you want, US or Imperial tablespoons, or even teaspoons, then press Calculate.

If you just want the everyday answer, leave it on US tablespoons.

How the conversion works

The number everyone remembers is the simple one: in US measures there are 16 tablespoons in a cup, and 48 teaspoons, since 3 teaspoons make a tablespoon. So as a rule of thumb:

tablespoons = cups × 16

The tool goes one step more precise. It converts your cup to millilitres first, then divides by the size of one tablespoon:

tablespoons = (cups × cup size in ml) ÷ millilitres per tablespoon

That is why, with the 240 ml US Legal cup, you will see about 16.2 tablespoons rather than a round 16. The familiar 16 comes from the slightly smaller US customary cup of about 237 ml. Both are correct, they just start from a different cup.

Good to know

The one conversion people forget is that 3 teaspoons make 1 tablespoon, not two. That single fact saves a lot of ruined batches.

Imperial spoons are larger than US spoons, so if you switch the spoon type to Imperial, the count drops a little for the same cup. When in doubt, US spoons are what most modern recipes mean.

Questions people ask

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

Sixteen US tablespoons, as a rule of thumb. So half a cup is 8 tablespoons and a quarter cup is 4.

Why does the tool show about 16.2, not 16?

Because it works through millilitres using the cup size you choose. The 240 ml legal cup gives a touch over 16, while the rounder 16 comes from the smaller customary cup.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

Three. It is the most commonly misremembered kitchen conversion, so it is worth locking in.
