What this does

So you are scaling something up, a vat of soup, a cooler of iced tea, a big batch of cold brew, and the recipe talks in cups while you are thinking in gallons. This converter makes that jump. Put in your cups, press Calculate, and it gives you gallons as a decimal, plus the nearest friendly fraction like a half or a quarter gallon when your amount lands close to one.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of cups.
  2. Press Calculate.
  3. Read the gallons as a decimal, and the common fraction when your amount is close to one.

Reset clears the box so you can try another amount.

How the conversion works

This one is simple. In US measures there are 16 cups in a gallon, so the tool just divides:

gallons = cups ÷ 16

So 8 cups is 8 ÷ 16, which is half a gallon, and 32 cups is a tidy 2 gallons. Nothing more to it than that.

Good to know

These are US gallons, where 1 gallon equals 4 quarts equals 16 cups. The UK imperial gallon is bigger, about 1.2 US gallons, so if you are working from a British recipe the numbers will shift.

The fraction readout is the handy part for shopping and serving. A quarter gallon is 4 cups, half a gallon is 8 cups, and three quarters of a gallon is 12 cups. When your amount does not sit near one of these common fractions, the tool just shows you the exact decimal instead.

Questions people ask

How many cups are in a gallon?

Sixteen, in US measures. So a gallon of stock is 16 cups, and half a gallon is 8.

Is this US or UK gallons?

US gallons. A UK imperial gallon is roughly 20 percent larger, so do not mix the two when you are scaling a recipe.

Why is the fraction sometimes blank?

The friendly fraction only appears when your amount is close to a common slice of a gallon, like a quarter or a half. For in between amounts, the tool shows the exact decimal on its own.
