What this does

So your recipe is in tablespoons but your measuring jug is metric, or you just want the millilitres. This converter handles it. Enter the tablespoons and it gives you the millilitres or litres. It accepts teaspoons too, so either spoon works.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Pick the spoon type, US or Imperial tablespoons, or teaspoons.
  3. Choose millilitres or litres, then press Calculate.

No ingredient needed, since tablespoons and millilitres both measure volume.

How the conversion works

It is your tablespoons multiplied by the size of one tablespoon:

millilitres = tablespoons × ml per tablespoon

A US tablespoon is about 14.8 millilitres, so 1 tablespoon is roughly 14.8 millilitres and 3 tablespoons is about 44.4. For litres, the tool just divides the millilitres by 1000.

Good to know

A metric tablespoon is defined as exactly 15 millilitres, while the US tablespoon used here is a touch smaller at about 14.8 millilitres. So if your recipe is metric, treating a tablespoon as 15 millilitres is perfectly fine.

Imperial tablespoons are larger again, at nearly 18 millilitres, so picking Imperial raises the result for the same number of spoons.

Questions people ask

How many millilitres is a tablespoon?

About 14.8 millilitres for a US tablespoon, or exactly 15 millilitres for a metric tablespoon. Close enough to treat as 15 in most recipes.

How many millilitres is 3 tablespoons?

About 44 millilitres using US tablespoons. Handy for scaling up a sauce or dressing.

Can I enter teaspoons?

Yes. The spoon dropdown includes teaspoons, so you can convert those to millilitres too.
