What this does

So your recipe is written in cups, but your pot, your jug, or your storage container is marked in quarts. This converter bridges that gap. Type in the cups, press Calculate, and it gives you quarts as a decimal along with a clean fraction, which is exactly what you want when you are making soup, stock, or a big batch of anything.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of cups.
  2. Press Calculate.
  3. Read the quarts as a decimal and as a fraction.

Reset clears the box for the next amount.

How the conversion works

There are 4 cups in a quart, so the tool simply divides your cups by four:

quarts = cups ÷ 4

So 4 cups is exactly 1 quart, and 6 cups is 1.5 quarts. Easy to picture once you know the anchor: four cups to a quart.

Good to know

In US measures, 1 quart equals 4 cups equals 2 pints, and 4 quarts make a gallon. So a quart sits neatly in the middle of the kitchen scale of things.

One thing worth remembering when you are shopping: a US quart is close to a litre but not the same. A quart is about 0.95 litres, so a litre carton is a touch more than a quart. Close enough for stock, but good to know if you are being precise.

Questions people ask

How many cups are in a quart?

Four, in US measures. So 2 quarts of broth is 8 cups.

Is a quart the same as a litre?

Almost, but not quite. A US quart is about 0.95 litres, so a litre is slightly more than a quart.

Is this US or UK quarts?

US quarts. The UK imperial quart is larger, so keep to one system when you scale a recipe.
