What this does

So you and a friend want a quick game of tic tac toe and you have only got one phone or laptop between you. This is for that. Take turns tapping the grid on the same screen, one of you is X, the other is O, and it tells you whose turn it is and who won. No app, no setup, just play.

How to use it

  1. Decide who is X and who is O. X goes first.
  2. Take turns tapping an empty square to place your mark.
  3. The line above the board shows whose turn it is, and announces the winner or a tie when the game ends. Hit Reset for another round.

Pass the device back and forth, or just reach across, whatever is easier.

How it works

The board is drawn with a small graphics library called p5.js. When you tap a square, it places the current player's mark and switches to the other player, updating the "X's turn" message as it goes. When someone gets three in a row, or the board fills up, it calls the game and shows the result. Everything runs right on your device.

A bit of strategy

Unlike playing the computer, this is two humans, so strategy actually matters and somebody can win. A few classics. Going first, as X, is a real advantage. The strongest opening square is the centre, because it sits on four of the eight winning lines, more than any other square. Corners are the next best. The move to aim for is a fork, where one mark creates two threats at once, so your opponent can only block one and you take the other.

The flip side is to watch your opponent for the same trick and block it early. And here is the catch, between two players who both know these tricks, the game always ends in a draw. It is only mistakes that decide it.

Where to use it

It is the perfect pass the time game for two, on a long wait, a car journey, a boring queue, or a quiet evening. Teachers and parents use it with kids, since it is a gentle way into thinking ahead and spotting patterns. And it settles the "just one more game" itch without anyone needing to find a pen and paper.

How many people can play?

Two, sharing the same screen. One plays X and the other plays O, taking turns.

Does it tell us who won?

Yes. The message above the board shows whose turn it is, then announces the winner or a tie when the game finishes.

Can every game be won?

No. If both players play well, tic tac toe ends in a draw. Wins usually come from one player making a mistake.
