What this does

So you need a mirror and there is not one to hand, but you do have a webcam. This turns that camera into one. It shows you a live view of yourself, and you can flip it, freeze it, and save a snapshot. Quick check before a call, a glance at your hair or teeth, that sort of thing.

How to use it

  1. Allow camera access when your browser asks. The live view appears straight away.
  2. Use Flip Horizontally or Flip Vertically if you want to change which way round the image is, and Reset to put it back.
  3. Pause to freeze the view, Download to save a snapshot as an image, and Stop Mirror to switch the camera off when you are done.

If you do not see anything, check that you allowed the camera and that nothing else is already using it.

How it works, and your privacy

The tool asks your browser for access to your camera, then shows that feed back to you on the screen. The flip buttons just mirror the picture one way or the other, which is why you can switch between the flipped view you are used to in a mirror and the true, unflipped view.

Here is the part that matters most. Everything happens on your own device. The video is not uploaded, it is not recorded to any server, and it is not sent anywhere. It is shown to you live and that is it. The only time anything is saved is if you press Download, which writes a single snapshot image to your own device. When you are finished, Stop Mirror ends the camera feed.

What people use it for

It is the stand in for a mirror when you do not have one, for a quick look at your face, hair, or outfit. People also use it the other way round, to check how they will actually look on camera before a video call or a recording, lining up their framing and lighting. And the snapshot is handy if you just want a quick photo of yourself without opening the camera app.

Questions people ask

Is my camera feed uploaded or recorded?

No. The video stays on your device and is only shown back to you. Nothing is uploaded, recorded to a server, or sent anywhere.

Why does it ask for camera permission?

It needs access to your camera to show the live view, the same way a video call does. You can deny it, or turn it off afterwards with Stop Mirror or in your browser settings.

Can I save a picture?

Yes. Press Download and it saves a snapshot image to your own device. Nothing leaves your device in the process.

What do the flip buttons do?

They mirror the image. A real mirror shows you flipped, so the flip buttons let you switch between that familiar view and the true, unflipped one.
