What are text faces

These are called kaomoji, which is Japanese for "face characters". They came out of the Japanese internet in the 1980s, and the clever thing about them is that you read them straight on, not tilted. Compare them to the Western style emoticon like :) where you tip your head sideways to see the smile. A kaomoji like (◕‿◕) is already facing you.

Because they are built from ordinary text characters rather than pictures, they work almost anywhere text does, and they can carry a lot of personality, a shrug, a wink, pure joy, or the classic table flip (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻.

Where to use them

People drop text faces into chats and messages, into social posts and comments, into usernames and bios, into stream chats, and into the odd work message when an emoji feels too plain. The table flip is a classic for mock frustration, the shrug for a cheerful "who knows", and the cute faces for being friendly. Since they are just text, they tend to survive being copied between apps that handle emoji differently.
